any BU theatre majors out there?

My D, a HS soph with a passionate interest in theatre, is beginning her search for an academically challenging school with a vibrant theatre department. How is the program at BU? Does it offer both a BA and BFA program? D is leaning heavily toward BA approach, in order to get a fuller liberal arts education and put off any career decisions until later. Other schools on her initial list are Yale, Brown, Vassar, Northwestern, Sarah Lawrence. She wants to be in/near city. Appreciate all feedback, pos and neg, and any thoughts about the other schools on the list. Thanks.

BU Theatre

My daughter is a freshman in the BFA theatre program at BU and loves every minute of it. This has been a very challenging first semester but also very rewarding for her. The theatre program is all BFA but after the first year, the students, with feedback from the faculty choose to pursue either a degree in acting or theatre studies. The theatre studies major gives more scheduling possibilities and it is possible to have a minor or in rare cases, a double-major. Many theatre studies majors want to be able to pursue their talents in playwriting, directing or dramaturgy as well. BU also has BFA programs for technical theatre such as stage management, lighting design, sound design, costuming, etc. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to PM me. I'd be happy to try to answer or put you in touch with my daughter. Both of use are more than happy to give you the good AND the bad!!!

BFA at BU

Hi caromom,

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like a wonderful program, and you must be extremely gratified that your daughter is so pleased with it. At this point--admittedly very early in the process--my daughter is leaning toward a BA rather than BFA program in order to leave bigger blocks of time for academic pursuits outside of theatre. This of course may be comlete fantasy on our part that a student can major in theatre beyond the most academic approach and have any time left for anything! But for the time being we're clinging to that hope. If things change I will take you up on your offer to PM you with more specific questions about the BU program.

Venicedad, I would suggest you go to the section on College Confidential for College Majors. Under that, there is a section called "Arts majors". Post your question about BFA vs. BA theater programs there. There are some folks who post there who will be able to answer your questions regarding the possibilities with these courses of study.

Thanks for your advice, thumper. Granted I may be an idiot, but I'm not able to locate "College Majors" within College Confidential. How do I get there?

At the top left of THIS page it says "college discussion". Click on that. You will come to the "cover page" of the college discussions. Scroll down....near the bottom, one of the titles is College Majors...and right under that the very first one is "Arts Majors".
