Lets say I apply to CAS, but at the end of my freshmen year I decide I want to be an engineer. How hard is it to switch between different colleges? Are some transfers more difficult than others?

IUT (Intra University Transfers) are really stressful for the most part. Mine has been almost like reapplyin to college. You'll have to take requisite classes, sometimes with difficult minimum standards. You'll fill out paperwork and write essays/memos.

If you're looking for Engineering, apply to engineering first - their curriculum gives you about 1 class that you can choose to have fun with but you're otherwise completely booked up in that college so an IUT would put you well behind the 8 ball.

I'm currently a Freshman in COM and I'm switching to CAS next semester. The process has been really easy, all I had to do was see an advisor and fill out some forms....

As was said - it's different in some places but for me (ENG to SMG) has been really difficult.

well yeah, since I'm a Freshman in COM I only have 1 COM class, my other 3 classes are CAS, and the liberal arts req. for COM is pretty close to divisional studies in CAS. I guess that's why it was much easier for me......but the thing is if you really want to switch colleges it shouldn't be much of a problem. I met this guy the other day, he's a junior and he's switching from ENG to CAS this year.....

True but switching into ENG would be very hard because you start their curriculum right away. Same for SMG - like nalgene says.

Some colleges and even more majors have VERY structured course progressions and they complicate transfers immensely.

Yes. Switching to or from CAS, COM, Sargent and even UNI if you're qualified in the first year or two isn't that hard, but entering or leaving CFA, SMG, ENG, and maybe SED (not sure) can be quite hard. For example, most programs in the School of Music require 8 semesters to complete, even if you started in another school of the university, because 8 semesters of lessons and ensemble are required.

I'm a freshman in ENG and if you're planning on switching into it from CAS after a year, you're going to end up taking summer classes. We take an engineering core class both first and second semester that you'd need to take and you'd have to make sure you were done with chem, finished 2 semesters of calc, and started physics.

If you have any doubt between ENG and CAS, apply to ENG and if you decide it's not what you want, switch into CAS
