Shelton?!

As a freshmen, I was hoping for Warren, but I was placed in Shelton. Shelton sounds much more quiet, spacious, and low-key than Warren, but I have heard and read a lot of complaints about its lack of freshmen. If anyone had a freshmen experience in Shelton, I would love to know their thoughts, along with anyone else who has been through the housing at BU. Thanks.

Shelton is definitely more quiet and less social than Warren. However, as a freshman, many of your friends will be in Warren and West. Once you make such friends, you will have an in at Warren anytime you want. Alot of my friends lived in Shelton and Myles and they just spent weekend nights hanging out with my friends and I at Warren doing whatever silly stuff we did at the time. Personally, I think you will enjoy having a separation between the social and fun place and your quiet place to study and sleep. Enjoy it because that is a situation that can really work out well for you.

Eugene O'Neill died in Room 401 of the Sheraton Hotel on November 27, 1953. The Sheraton is now Shelton Hall.

He's buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain - which is part of Boston.

Yeah, as more of a quiet student I think I'll really enjoy Shelton, and after talking with some people I'm beginning to admire Shelton. I was only wondering whether Shelton detracts from the freshmen experience, and it seems like it does not.

The "freshman experience" is completely what you make of it. Don't worry. Make friends in the more social dorms and you will have the best of both worlds.

Warren is not for everyone

FWIW my son asked for and was assigned to Warren for his freshman year last year, having heard that it is THE place to be for first year students. Even though he got the coveted corner double, he simply did not enjoy Warren. He's a nice friendly kid and all, but he found Warren's 24/7 frenetics way too nutsoid for his laid back personality and seriousness about academics. So Warren is really not THE freshman panacea for everyone.

He had a lot of freshman friends in Shelton, and spent a lot of time there. For the sophomore year lottery, Shelton was his second choice, for its reputation for being social but not insane, location on Bay State Road, and spacious room layouts. He got his first choice in the honors dorm nearby on Bay State but honestly he would have been happy to be assigned to Shelton too.

Hope this is helpful.

I lived in Shelton last year. there were plenty of freshman but also sophomores and juniors. It is definitely quieter than Warren/West but its a lot nicer of a dorm. It also depends what floor you're on i think... If you have any specific questions feel free to message me

Thanks ud2006. Just a a few general questions:

1) I was assigned to room 0405R; is that on the fourth floor?

2) Also, do you know the general layout of the rooms and what each room has?

Thanks again

yeah thats on the fourth floor. the corner rooms are the biggest, i know rooms ending in -19 and -01 are corner rooms but i'm not sure about the others. When you open the door there is a little area like the size of a closet and a door on the left and the right to go into each room. some rooms have walk in closets that the four of you share or each room will have a smaller closet. You can rearrange the rooms however you want, there is a desk, dresser and bed for each of you. All the rooms are different sizes but most are pretty spacious. The bathroom will be in either the R or the L room, so it is kind of annoying htat you have to walk through another person room, or ahve someone walk through yours, to get to teh bathroom. We had enough room in our room to bring an extra closet thing from ikea and two of those comfy folding chairs and a refridgerator. Overall I love shelton, the rooms are really nice and its social, but not ridiculously social. Also i love baystate.

Shelton also has this great study lounge on the 9th floor, there are windows all the way around that have great views of the river adn there's tables and couches and a quiet room. there's also a tv i think. the dining hall isn't terrible but west or warren is definitely better. it is really nice to have food in your building though.

The rooms ending in -05 are set up a little different than the other rooms. For these rooms, you walk into a little entryway which leads to the R room and from the R room there's a doorway that leads to L. And -05R is bigger than -05L and it has a bigger closet and a second window, so you got lucky. The bathroom is in L.

And I love the Shelton study lounge. Looooove.

I really don't understand BU housing.

I'm a sophomore, and when we had to select our rooms for the coming year, places like Shelton and Myles were filled up, yet every year, spaces magically open up for freshmen in these kinds of residence halls. It's quite mysterious. The only thing I can attribute it to is older students leaving for study abroad, because I have no other ideas.

I wouldn't worry too much about where you are though. I was in Warren freshman year and while it was great, half of the group of friends I accumulated didn't even live in Warren. You don't need to live in Warren to meet people, and you'll find that BU's social world will suck you in pretty quickly whether you like it or not.
