question about using limewire and such on your own laptop using ResNet

so at orientation they said that you're not allowed to do that and that you can't do it on resnet or something like that, blah blah. but i was wondering, if you're using your own laptop and you use limewire and all that stuff in your dorm will they really be able to catch you? and if they do, will they actually enforce what they said at orientation?

Yes they will enforce everything they said at orientation. BU is balls out with their rules and especially their penalties. But yeah BU's network (ResNet) is monitored by a third party basically just for this reason and if they catch people, which they have in the past plenty of times, BU is notified and obligated to get you caught. The only way around it is setting up a secured wireless access point in your dorm, which is also prohibited, but something that you can get away with pretty easily. Just make sure you do it right so the IT guys don't know you're posted up, but even then they don't really care as long as you're not messin around.

The RIAA has been pretty busy sending letters to BU. The real issue is hosting files, not downloading something, in part because a hoster is more bluntly a pirate but also because of network loads.

I would not mess around with this at college at all. It's a really great way to get yourself kicked out for a stupid reason. Get all of your filesharing out of the way beforehand!

You are more likely to get sued by the RIAA.

If you want to take the chance, go ahead. Odds are probably nothing will happen to you, but it's really not worth the money...to me, at least. I've heard too many stories...and I wouldn't go directly against my school's policies either.

Theres always torrents and using clients that encrypt your downloads, although it is still detectable if BU see's a large chunk of bandwidth being used by you. There is one other way in which you can actually frame BU of doing the downloading but that's most likely illegal and against BU's terms.

Best advice is to not risk taking a chance. The places that are monitored the absolute most are college networks. Don't risk it.

The network will throttle your use if you go nuts. That is common now in universities.

To date, I have dled over 292gigs and shared over 500 gigs of data on BU's network. Don't seed torrents, and don't dl mainstream music.
