There seems to be confusion...

I personally and perhaps other people would like to know a few things:

To the people receiving the Bowdoin letters:

1. Are you Caucasian?

2. Is it an early write or an official acceptance?

3. Do we have UNTIL March 28th or is that specifically the date on which everyone hears simultaneously who haven't already received their letters?

4. Has anyone received a REJECTION/WAITLIST letter?

I live in Southern California and this waiting game has been driving me absolutely nuts. Seeing a myriad people on this forum getting their letters already (some of whom reside on the same coast as I do) does not help my case whatsoever.

Mille grazie for your help.

To answer some of your questions... I think there is some sort of a difference between the people who have received acceptances and those who got acceptances and invitations to the bowdoin experience. I received an acceptance, but not an invitation to the campus... I called them today, and they said that that was for minority students. I am caucasian by the way. All the letters will go out on the 28th... at least that's what the letter said. It is an official acceptance, but the only things I received was a letter in a large envelope and a card to send a deposit back to the school. I am assuming that they will send something else on the 28th. Hope that helps, and by the way... I feel your pain about the waiting game. I hate living 3000 miles away from all the schools because I always get things like a week after they were dated sometimes. By the way... where about in So Cal are you from... I'm from Newport Beach.

lecorbeau-- My daughter was thrilled to receive her acceptance early. We live near Irvine and she is not minority. The large majority of acceptances are yet to come. It is anxiety provoking to read of the early write notifications as everyone awaits news. Hang in there!

My caucasian, California D received her early acceptance letter a week or so ago. Overall, she has gotten early acceptances from 5 of her 8 schools. The remaining three schools are making us feel quite unsettled!

Lecorbeau, early acceptances/ likely are given out to a) minority students (most likely to inform them of the Bowdoin Experience) and b) exceptional students. Also generally, people who recieve their Bowdoin acceptance first are people who live locally within the New England area (I know that because when I was accepted last yr, I recieved my package alot sooner than my fellow classmates, since I live in MA). So don't worry if you don't see anything in the mail yet. I wish you the best of luck (don't stress out, just breathe deep), and perhaps you too shall be a Bowdoin Polar Bear.

Also remember that diversity =/ minority per se. You can't have a diverse class without your run-of-the-mill middle class caucasian students.

That said, RunningForLife is right, the early writes are for the people going to the Bowdoin Experience (which they need to recieve early) and to outstanding students Bowdoin feels might be lured to Bowdoin away from a school higher up on the pecking order with a little personal attention.

The tables will soon be turning

Once all the letters go out, adcom goes into reverse mode, where they do all they can to meet their class size/goals etc. My daughter was an early acceptance, but she knew Bowdoin was her top choice. Those of you who are fortunate enough to get into several top schools will feel like celebrities as they woo you for a place in their school. What fun.

KSolow: how did you find out about the admitted students dates? We haven't received anything here.

Oh, and as an early decision, our daughter did receive a nice letter that was personal, mentioning some of her background and interests specifically. Very classy.

Look for the large envelop (81/2 x11 or so). Inside you will find a grey folder with your acceptance letter, etc.

Exciting times for all of you and we wish you all the best.

"do the "not-so-exceptional" admits receive personalized letters?"

this i can answer (as an ED applicant from 3 years ago, i can't answer most of these questions...): NO, not everyone gets a personalized letter - as far as i know, only the early-writes (exceptional minorities/very exceptional non-minorities) receive personalized notes.

also, don't rely on the given date (march 28th) - bowdoin is notorious for being late with their letters.

so the basic message is this: DON'T WORRY if you haven't gotten your letter yet, as only a small minority (hah!) of the accepted students are receiving them at this point - if you haven't gotten a letter by the first week of april, you might want to call bowdoin and see what's up, but either last year or the year before that (i forget which), some students didn't get their letters until the *second* week of april... i don't know why bowdoin is so late with their letters (it seems like it would work to their disadvantage, as applicants might just decide to go to another school before they even heard from bowdoin), but it's commonly known that they're slow about getting them out.

best of luck to you all, and i hope to see you next year!

I was responding to "PolarBearDad''s question about the admitted students weekend. I have no idea when the next round of letters will be sent out. Sorry.

The person serving as Bowdoin's admissions director this year was not the admissions director last year so what happened last year in terms of dates, etc., will not necessarily happen this year.
