Bowdoin's definitely more selective (though I sincerely doubt you'd be able to determine that one school's students were smarter than another's).

Does anybody know how accepting the school is toward minorities? And how big are the groups? By minorities, I mean Asians, AA, LGBT, and Hispanics.

And, do you know if Bowdoin is more writing intensive than other good LAC's?

How is Bowdoin "definitely more selective?" Both schools had an acceptance rate of ~ 21% last year, although applications to Bowdoin may be somwhat more self-selecting. If you say that the % who don't submit SAT at Bowdoin are at the 25% range of the class, the avg SAT for Bowdoin would be 1370 vs 1385 for Cornell. Both Cornell and Bowdoin have first year freshman seminars. Cornell is certainly more well known since it is part of the Ivy League and UG alone is about seven times larger than Bowdoin. Besides being northeast and rural, I would think these schools are very different and one would clearly stand out from the others in terms of fit.

Bowdoin's acceptance rate last year was 18.5%, and according to yesterday's new york times, this year its a straight 18%. Just giving you the facts. I agree that these stats are not nearly as important as the "fit" of the school--size, student body, curriculum, location, etc--for the particular student. OBviously both places attract "smart" people and well trained faculty. I do have the sense that Bowdoin is a place that encourages intellectual curiousity, (even if I cant spell) and its less competitive. Not sure about Cornell in this way, but that is one of the reasons I chose Bowdoin. BTW- at the end of the NYT article about "elite" colleges that have low acceptance rates, including Bowdoin, Shain said something like, "I get why its so important but I also dont... Where you go to college has very little to do with how successful or happy you are in life.." A word to the wise...

wedge, i know this year bowdoin was very considerate in choosing minorities for their school. If you go here Journal: Black enrollment ranks fifth

It talks about how bowdoin has a lot more minorities than other liberal arts colleges and they are still trying to increase diversity.

How would you compare Bowdoin versus Middlebury for Economics and Political Science? I know that Middlebury is probably stronger for Languages and International Studies, but is Bowdoin reasonably striong in those areas?

bowdoin is especially strong in government and has a very good reputation in econ. i think of all the LACs, bowdoin has the best reputation for studying political science (or government).

"The Government Department, whose prominent professors include Allen Springer, Paul Franco, Richard E. Morgan, Chris Potholm and Jean Yarbrough, was ranked the top small college political science program in the world by researchers at the London School of Economics in 2003."

Snucky-
I'm in the same situation - Cornell vs. Bowdoin. When I visited both recently, I got much more personal attention at Bowdoin. But I still find it hard to turn down the Ivy League school because there was nothing I really disliked about it except that it was bigger. Did you come to any conclusions? I'd appreciate it.

Hey golly, I've revisited both schools in the past month, and I think I'm gunna go with Bowdoin. I really like Cornell for its size and diversity, but I think I'm gunna choose Bowdoin despite the small and relatively homogenous student body because I'm really into Maine and the outing club there, and overall the vibe at Bowdoin seemed to suit me better.

I really like the atmosphere at Bowdoin (more than at Cornell), but I am worried about the lack of diversity (both cultural and intellectual). Also, I am not sure whether I would become bored at such a small school because I currently live in a big city.

Sorry for that rant...

Could someone tell me about the alumni connections for Bowdoin and how easy it is to find jobs/internships after graduation? I would most likely go to law school or some grad school, but I am just wondering about the Bowdoin connections that exist outside of the school.

It's interesting that there are so many other people choosing between Cornell and Bowdoin when they are such different schools.
