Shot at admittance?

My name is Cooper and i go to a small Alternative school in Anchorage Alaska which does not offer AP courses. I have taken the hardest schedule possible, i think, and my teachers would agree.
GPA so far and raising a little more then 3.7
I am going to drive each morning to the bigger high school in town and take AP calc BC this year because my schedule allows.
SAT scores: All 650s i think, i'm going to retake it though, don't worry.
Easily have 3 strong letters of Rec.
Extra curriculars:
Wrote full length novel 9th grade
Wrote screen play and storyboarded a short-film 10th grade
Model UN: 9th 10th
Youngest certified Bridge Director in US:9th
JV soccer: 9th 10th
Sophmore class VP
Junior Class President
School president: 12th
Three completed gifted mentorships: One in opperating room of local hospital for 50 hours, next in emergency department of local hospital 50 hours, and one in Alaska Teen Media institute as a Reporter 50 hours.
Have written and done interviews for stories aired on Alaska Public radio and won awards.
Crew member at Coldstone Creamery for a year 10th-11th.
Soccer coach for U16 boys 10th; U12 girls 11th
Big brother for Big brother big sisters 11th and 12th
Volunteer in Emergency Department 100 hours.
Planned, proposed and organized School-wide Art Day, where artists from community came in and did workshops for an entire day. 11th
Volunteer for Barack Obama Campaign >100 hours. 11th-12th
more things that i just can't remember at this time.

I have already written my essay but am considering rewriting it. It is about a really intense experience i had during my mentorship in the emergency department when i saw a man die. Then it goes on to describe the conversation i had with the doctor afterwards and how instead of turning me off wanting to be a doctor, it strengthened my drive.

I enjoy athletics a lot and participating in school gov't. I want to be pre-med but also would like to dabble in foreign language, political science, econ and such. I want to study abroad or do research over years if economically feasable.
Any opinions on if I'm a good Bowdoin fit and what my chances are would be appreciated.
Cooper

Sorry, Cooper. Don't mean to ignore you, but I never do chance threads. Who can second guess these adcoms. You have some things in your favor, Alaska location, good EC's, and others working against you, lowish scores and GPA, so it is hard to say.

Give it a shot and add at least one two safeties that really appeal to you.

hey there. i think you have a shot. if your SATs improve, that may certainly help. knowing your rank may also help, since a 3.7 is good only relative to what other students at your school score. also, do you know if your peers from previous years applied to bowdoin and whether they encountered success?

i think it's a good shot, but still perhaps a slight reach. an ED application would help a bit, i think.

good luck with the election up there in alaska. especially now!

I'm with pb...I think it's really hard to tell, just because of the nature of selective school admissions. I like the breadth of your ECs, don't see a whole lot that you've carried through all 4 years, but it seems to me that the ones you have done are sort of one-time things, like the internships and stuff. Alaska location is a definite plus--it would be a whole different ball game if you were from MA (that's my problem). So, overall, I think it'll basically come down to the adcoms and the pool and all the other mumbo-jumbo stuff they do behind closed doors. Good luck with your application!

As a side note, good for you on the Obama campaign!

I spoke to one of the admissions directors and since reporting the SATs are optional (although chances are lowered if you dont), he said to call the admissions office and find out whether you should report them so that way he might be able to put in a good word for you. Check the website for Elmer Moore. Not really sure about chances because its pretty tough to get into.

yeah, I've spoken to elmer in person before. He's great. I am 10/37 since you have to keep a "c" average or you get kicked out.

your EC's are stellar! Have you considered applying to an ivy league school that meets your intrests as well? You have a good shot, not only at Bowdin, but at other top-tier schools as well. Yet, you never know what the adcoms are thinking so if I were in your shoes i would consider applying to a couple other selective schools as well.
Good Luck =)
