Bernstein scholarship status?

When we toured Brandeis with our son (then a junior) in the summer of '08, we were told about the Leonard Bernstein 4-year music scholarship. The university's web site still has a page about this scholarship, but there's no mention of it or link to it on the "scholarships" page in the financial aid section; you can only find the page by searching (either with the site's own search engine or Google).

Does anybody know what the status of this scholarship is? I fear it may be a casualty of the past year's financial woes.

Nightchef - Unfortunately, you may be right. My D was talking with a new frosh and he had been preparing to apply for this scholarship, but told her it was not offered for 2009-2010. I don't know if this is a permanent decision or only temporary.

Yes, we were just at the open house yesterday, and one of the music faculty confirmed the bad news. "The fund is under water" was his grimly amusing way of putting it.

Still, we are going to apply and cross our fingers that we can afford it (if he gets in...his GPA is borderline at best, though everything else should be fine). Our visit yesterday confirmed that Brandeis would be an outstanding fit for our son.

The fund being "under water" is actually a technical term meaning that the current market value of the scholarship's endowment is less than when it was originally gifted. Under such conditions, Massachusetts' law prohibits any draw down of interest or principal of the funds until they return to an "above water" status.
