Howdy dudy

I just felt sad that the BYU thread hasn't had any posts for so long. Anybody going to/applied to/likes/has anything to say about BYU? I've been accepted, but I'm waiting for my other schools before I decide if I'm going. I'd really like to go to one of my others.

Same here. I'm from Provo, and I really really don't like the culture here. It was my safety. ;-)

What's it like out there? Is everything really "mormon-ish" (you know what I mean). I just don't know if it's the right place for me, but I think I'm going to be forced to go there if I don't get into any of my other schools.

Lol. Um . . . yeah . . . let's put it this way, Utah Valley is basically Mormon Central, and Provo is the heart of Utah Valley. There is literally a church on every corner. At my high school there is a really really low percentage of potsmokers and non-virgins. And actually a lot of people in my senior class are "VL" (virgin lips, you'll need to know that if you come here). And politically, everything is very conservative. (Abortion is evil, so are Democrats, etc.) But still, honestly speaking, it's a really cool culture, just because the people are so much cleaner to be around. BYU's for you if you never want to be sexiled, and you just want to be around clean people. I've heard some people say the school has kind of a suppressive atmosphere, but also others say that it's a big enough campus that you can pretty much find everything. It's sort of true, the other night I met some kids from Arkansas, Alabama, and Florida, and another girl from Japan.

I'm at BYU right now and the first semester sucks. It will be a total culture shock to anybody. However, the campus is large enough that you will find diversity in the student body to find a group of interesting people that you can associate with. I finally found that this semester and have been having a lot of fun. Could I be having more fun elsewhere? Probably, but as it stands, I have a great group of friends that are interesting, liberal(!), smart, and moral. A majority of the folks I hang out with are returned missionaries as well.

How are the science classes there? I am interested in doing Neuroscience while preparing for medical school. Do you know anyone who's taking that? Thanks!

I haven't taken any science classes (excluding Physics and Math) but a friend of mine has taken some Neuroscience classes. He said he really liked them. The one hitch is that you have to be a Neuroscience major to take the classes.
