Too controversial of an essay topic?

I'm thinking of writing one of my essays on how it was for me, a homosexual, to grow up in the South (specifically, Georgia). I'm not sure how this will be taken by colleges. What do you think?

i think thats perfectly fine.
my essay was about my struggle with anorexia and how it has changed my outlook on life. i think the more personal you go with your application, the more the college has to view you as a person vs. just numbers..
