how do you tell people you're going to Brown...

...without sounding like you're bragging?

don't say "up [or down] in Rhode Island..." because that is even more obnoxious.

just say Brown and leave it at that.

yeah, to be honest, most people don't even know where Brown is, let alone the fact that it's an Ivy.

I mention it when they ask. And if they ask more about the school (first question is usually on its location), then I'll answer.

To Oblivion: I won't be able to tell you anything you probably don't know already, but there's no perfect "formula" to get into an ivy. Admissions is tricky like that. Enjoy your high school years and balance strong academics with equally strong extracurriculars (leadership positions and commitment through years of involvement). Stats, as superficial as they are, do matter to an extent. I haven't heard of anyone getting in with a 1300 SAT score. So, study for those tests! But let me reiterate the importance of doing things YOU want to do, not things you know will look "good" on college applications. Have fun, but don't pull your hair out.

I would always just say in Rhode Island since there is another school called Brown-Mackie everyone thought I was going to for a while...

Don't worry, just about every person I've told has responded, "Why would you ever go to a school named after a color?"

yeah, it's definitely hit and miss. Someone asked me if Brown was a community college (I'm not sure how I sholud feel about that, haha) but on the other hand when other people find out where I'm going they're like "Wow! You must be so incredibly smart!!!"

I agree with the "get over yourself" comment. These *how do you tell people you're going to ______* posts are getting kind of old. Brown is a great school congrats...it's arguably the worst of the Ivies though so I don't get the concern regarding coming across as bragging. Pretty soon we'll start seeing posts asking "how do I tell people that I go to SDSU without sounding like I'm bragging?"

arguably worst of the Ivies? what a bag of summer's eve to come on the Brown freshman forum and make a statement like that.

About 60% of the people I tell I am going to Brown look puzzled and confused. I know they are thinking, a school named after a colour??!!? But the other 40% freak out and go ape _ _ _ _.
