mountains, at most schools that defer the large majority of the ED applicants, it is indeed the case that while a few will be admitted, it's often even lower odds for deferred EDs than for RDs. I don't know about Brown specifically, but that is the case at most, (though not all) highly selective schools.

As a mother myself, I would not raise your son's hopes at this point, but stick more or less to your original message. If he gets in, it will be a nice surprise, but it's most important that he move on emotionally and focus on his other choices, rather than staying unduly invested in Brown.

We haven't yet heard from my daughter's early school, but if deferred, that will be my msg to her, although her early school has the unusual policy of denying 60% of their early pool, since their stated goal is to provide a final answer as much as possible. But that will still be my message.

I've met many who are deferred who get in. It happens, I don't know anything numbers wise, but I've run across more than a handful of those students. I've ran into at least 3-4 who came off the waitlist.

So yes, there is hope, as far as I'm concerned.

Deferred students: my son was deferred ED a year ago and then waitlisted. But he was then accepted off the waitlist and is as happy as can be at Brown. In between the deferral and acceptance he worked very hard on his other applications but kept in touch with the admissions office at Brown. He sent updates about his classes and EC's, sent an additional writing sample, and stated each time that Brown was his first choice and would attend if admitted. Obviously, they can't admit all who are in this situation, but if Brown is your first choice do all you can to remind them of your interest.

Ailey, I am definitely doing what you suggested. We told him to keep an open mind about all the other colleges on his list and it'll be icing on the cake if he gets in to Brown. Things do happen for a reason unbeknownst to us.

Accepted!

Decision: Accepted to Brown and the PLME!!!

Stats:
-SAT: M800/V760/W710
-SAT IIs: Math IC - 780/Chem - 790/Bio M - 770
-GPA: 4.516 Weighted
-Rank: 1/180
-Other stats: Maxed out of available high school curriculum junior year, so currently taking classes at local colleges and a few independent study classes at school. Taken nine AP exams, with 5's on all nine, will have at least eleven AP's at end of senior year. Taken a total of 5 college classes to date, one at Brown (not a summer class, a real class).

Subjective:
-Essays: Awesome? Started writing them back in April, finished them by June, and edited them up until application was sent in.
-Teacher Recs: No idea, but they got me in...
-Counselor Rec: Again, no clue.
-Hook (if any): First from school to apply to program, probably first in school for all academic honors. Legacy (though, only a graduate school alumnus).

Location/Person:
-School Type: Public
-Ethnicity: Chinese
-Gender: M

Other Factors: Personally sought out internships, and ended up gaining experience in three separate ones with a pediatrician, allergist, and in a hematology lab. Dunno how many hours total. Siemens Award for Advanced Placement, National AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction. National Merit Semi. NHS VP. Competitive swimming freshmen to junior year. Bunch of state awards.

General Comments: Happy beyond words.
