Hey I really don't have much business being on a Brown thread but I was just wondering what my chances are of getting in to Brown. The only reason I would ever even think of applying is because of legacy. My mom, grandfather, and great grandfather all went to Brown. So I guess my main hook here is legacy.

-Honors Spanish (5, for whatever that means to anyone) (B+)

-AP Calculus BC

-AP Spanish Lang.
-Honors Physics

EC
Swimming/Water Polo-4 years of each (varsity 11/12)
100+ hours of community service: coaching water polo (ages 7-11), Boys and Girls Club camp counselor, city harvest
Travel Water Polo- California Junior Olympics Tournament team every year since age 12 (from the east coast), Spain (Barcelona/Sevilla)

Don't be too harsh I'm not expecting to have any chance.

You would need to bring up your SAT's. If you have extraordinary EC's, you may have a shot. Apply ED.

i am taking the sat's again to improve my math and reading, i am also starting a financial internship soon and hopefully other ec's will find their way into my application. My mom wants me to check the school out just for kicks and maybe we will learn a bit more there. thanks.

You're too hard on yourself! Bring up your SATs and aim for a 2200, and you definitely have a chance. You have wonderful ECs, and with a raised SAT you have a shot! Admissions for top schools are so randomized that it can't hurt to apply. If you're positive that Brown is your top school and that tuition is not a huge deal, then apply ED for a better chance. thanks for the advice and confidence boost. this idea of applying really just popped into my head recently. I'll keep doing what i'm doing and see what happens.

It's definitely worth it to apply! You never know what admissions officers are looking for, and you could be the perfect fit for what they want. Boosting your SAT and continuing to improve your grades would definitely help, and strong essays and recs will be important. I know several people who have gotten into schools they "shouldn't" have gotten into based on their stats, but the admissions process is so random it's nearly impossible to predict acceptances or rejections with absolute certainty

If you visit and really want to go to Brown then do apply ED, and also talk to the water polo coach etc. That will be a better "hook" than your legacy status. (and do retake your SATs, or ACT if you think you might do better with that. )

Generally top schools don't care about your freshmen GPA, especially if you show an upward trend. Raise your SAT score to a 2200+. Your E.Cs aren't bad, especially since water polo isn't something that everyone does, and you clearly put a lot of effort into it. I think you have a shot so don't quit from applying!

thanks for the encouragement and advice. standardized testing isn't a strong point for me, but i know i can do better than did first time. i am signed up to take the sat again and to take the act. I will try to get in touch with a coach but i am not sure if i will be a good fit for the water polo team, i wasn't planning on playing in college.
