I'm going to make this really quick: I am proficient in the Korean writing system and know basic expressions but I want to study Korean more at Brown. Specifically, I want to major in East Asian Studies. I am starting to learn Mandarin but have no idea about writing system, just sounds (not even expressions besides wo hen e). I want to learn Japanese too, but I am familiar with Korean and Mandarin more. So if I concentrated in east Asian studies, could I take language classes in Mandarin and Korean????? The problem is that Brown says they don't offer advanced Korean. I don't know how starting Mandarin from scratch would help/hinder me.

EDIT: This is really confusing but I really need to start freewriting my common app essay now haha.

You definitely could take two Asian languages. I'm not sure about levels, but sometimes with less-popular languages it depends on what professors are currently around. I looked at next fall's schedule and besides the intro classes, they have Korean 500, which is a relatively high level, as well as a 900-level course in "Media Korean."

lol I am definitely not ready for Korean 500. If I actually get into Brown, I guess I would do Mandarin and a little Korean. But I'm glad you said you can take 2! Thank you!

Basically, if a class is offered at Brown and you meet the pre-recs, you can take it. You can even sometimes take it without the pre-recs, depending on the subject/professor.

Specifically with Korean, they don't always offer the intro sequence :\ (low interest I guess). Email Hye-Sook and see if you guys can set up some independent learning though!
