It is really hard to limit the answers. What happens if your answer is a few char over the limit? We are just talking a couple of letters not even one whole word.

when I applied to Brown it wasn't on-line but for med school apps if you're over the limit you physically can't submit.

From the last 2 years of students responses, it seems that if you are just a few characters over, the answer will still "go in". But then I'll bet if it is that close, you could find one word that has a different word or phrasing that is a few letter shorter?

I would take the safe route and not go over the character limit. If you can find another word/way to phrase it, do it.
