If you're by a miracle accepted into the Dual Degree is it possible to back out of it to just attend Brown?

Yes, it is. The way admission works is that you're first evaluated separately by Brown and RISD, and they only look at your application to the program if you're accepted to both. I have a friend who was accepted by both Brown and RISD, but not by the program, so that's another possibility. There are also cases of students starting the program, but later choosing to receive only a degree from one of the schools.
