| What Level of English Fluency/Proficiency is needed for Undergrad admission?
I must have posted this before in a less than PC way. Not meaning to offend anyone. I had been asked this question in the past from a South American student, and a native German speaker. I know many undergrads who are from foreign countries, but all have flawless English speaking and usually excellent English writing skills, so I wondered what Brown's admission criteria are? (Of course it is true that essays can be proof read to the extent that they can be an extremely poor criteria for English language skills, and the news articles re Chinese problems have been extensive.)
So question was to those with more insight re Brown currently. Although I don't want to quash the hopes of foreign students who may be academically gifted, just not in English, I also don't want to give false hope.
So I asked some current students and got the following info:
"there are some students (primarily Chinese) who have heavily accented English and occasionally make mistakes with some English words, but they are understandable"
If Brown has any question about your English skills, they will require TOEFL scores.
There is no ESL available at Brown for undergrads.
the (above) Chinese students tend to stay in social circles with other native Chinese speakers. tend to be math, CS or econ concentrators.
Anyone else with advice for "less than very proficient in English" students who may be thinking about Brown?
