lying on application- advice please

i applied early and was deferred. my friend is applying RD, and it came about in passing that she lied on her application and said she was Mexican when, in reality, she is Caucasian through and through. She is very dark, and there is nothing in the picture she sent that would make admissions officers question her heritage. I told her it was an extremely unfair (and dishonest) advantage that she was giving herself, and she told me to stay out of it. Am I wrong to be so upset? I feel like it is my spot (or that of someone equally deserving) that is being threatened. Is there anything admissions offiecers do to catch this type of thing? If not, what (if anything) do you think I should do?

let her do her thing, u do yours, she can deal w/ it herself. if she's ur friend, talk to her, or if u hate her inform brown:P. lol. i've often wondered how they can check race; i mean, it's justw hat u identify with, so couldn't u say you had a black great grandfather or a cherokee aunt? lol. asides from the obvious moral issues, heritage is hard to check.

Perhaps you could wait until RD decisions come out in April. If your friend isn't accepted, then it'll be good that you stayed out of it. If your friend is accepted, at that point you can contemplate how to go about correcting things (and you should). She's not much of a friend if she would give herself an unfair advantage over you, so don't worry about *betraying* her.

that's pathetic. she openly acknowledges she doesn't qualify to get into Brown.

How you deal with this is your own personal decision. There are a lot of possibilities in this situation. Your friend may well have out and out lied. She may get a way with it. She may get caught. If her stats put her in the running for Brown, and she is not a National Merit recognized Hispanic scholar or something that is often a flag. A mention to the GC may result. She may be contacted by a Hispanic rep. It may end up being an uncomfortable lie to live out for her.

She may have just said this to you without having done this. She may have some Hispanic in her.

You just let it go and forget about it, you can send a note to the GC at your school or a note to Brown.

How you react to these situations can tell you who you are as well.

i find that usually people who joke about this are indeed part hispanic...I'd confront her about it, but otherwise stay out of her business.

Definitely make sure she's not hispanic before you do anything. If you feel uncomfortable reporting her yourself, you can always tell a GC or someone.

she's not taking your spot, and shes not putting you at a disadvantage.

she is only putting hispanics at a disadvantage.

if you deserve to get in you will, this will make absolutely no difference, and in the real world it will let alot worse.

lol, once in HS my dad put down african american as his ethnicity as a joke on like some standardized test...which was funny b/c there wasn't a single black kid at his school, and then they started offering him a bunch of scholarships and stuff and he quickly told them it had just been a joke lol;p

As someone previously mentioned, if she really is caucasian, there's no way that the alumni who interviews her won't be just a tad suspicious. Wonder if she speaks fluent spanish...
