chance? or too ambitious...(yea another one of those sorry)

hey guys! so some of y'all's stats are *wicked* intimidating.

i'm looking to apply to brown, among other places. i'm pretty well rounded and such but my class rank (in part due to drawing tough teachers, in part due to my idiotic no-homework-,thanks policy freshman year) is *awful*

anyway skim over this and let me know what you think, if you don't mind!

Ridiculously competitive public high school in Austin, TX
White female (hmm not so helpful haha)
GPA – 93.75 unweighted
Rank – 72/654 (see?)
SAT – taken it one time CR 690 M 690 W 750 = 2130
SAT II's - US His - 740 Writing (or maybe it was reading) 710, Physics 690
Submitting my ACT score instead – 33 (equates to a 1470 SAT, 35 Reading 32 Math 30 Science 34 writing, something like that)

Sophmore year we didn’t have any APs offered but I took the WHis (independent study plus our preAP class) and got a 4

Junior Courses: Pre-Calculus PreAP, Teen Teaching (community service, working with the elementary schools around the district, lead multi-day expeditions, etc), Physics B AP (AP score = 5), English III AP ( AP score = 5), Spanish IV AP (5), AP USH (5)

Senior Courses: Gov AP, Economics AP, Spanish V Lit AP, English IV Lit AP, Calc AB AP, Bio II AP, Human Geography AP, Psychology AP

Service: 5 years as a volunteer soccer coach (though only 3 in HS), Teen Teaching as mentioned above, Cleaning Up The Environment (C.U.T.E.) Club soph/junior/senior year, El Buen Samaritano (working with spanish-speaking kids 2 hours/week) just starting that one, co-founder of Girls’ Energy Towards Making A Difference which works on an assortment of projects within the community (christmas gifts to poor families, working on a soccer league for kids with disability)

*Athletics:- Division I Club Soccer (9 hours a week, generally, Division SII state champions freshman year)
-Cross Country: 4 year varsity, 3X (so far) MVP, 2X District Champions (team), 2X District Champion (individual, freshman year = 2nd place), 2X state qualifier (33rd last year w/a 2 mile time of 11:48), Captain
-Track: undefeated in district (3 team titles, 3x1600m title, 3x3200m title), state qualifier 3200m (7th in Texas), 2 mile PR 11:18, mile PR (track) 5:12, mile PR (road race) 5:04 (came out to be 18th in all divisions of the state, or like 8th in 5A), captain
(our district is a compilation of the 8 austin-area schools with an enrollment of 1,950+)

Academic Awards: Outstanding Student of the Year – English II Pre-AP, Duke Talent Search state recognition 2002 (does that still count? 7th grade SATs…probably not), NHS

Music: 5 years of cello (2 years in the high school philharmonic orchestra)
-8 years of classical piano study including competitions (though I’ve placed…once haha)
^ 5 time (2 hs) honors recital qualifier at the University of Texas Baroque/Classical &/or Romantic/Contemporary Festivals (I’m sending in a CD)

Summer study abroad/cultural immersion program in San Sebastian, Spain (this year)

Legacy: both parents (one got 3 degrees from there, is that 3x as good? probably not so much...), 3 out of 4 aunts/uncles, 2 grandparents (+ 2 great uncles), 2 or 3 great grandparents

O darn no work experience, not including sporatic babysitting.

Thanks guys! Sorry it was sooo long

P.S. my dad's also really pushing for me to apply to dartmouth and yale. while i like both schools a lot we don't have any legacy there and i'm afraid it would be a waste of $100+. would it be stupid to apply there as well?

haha no actually the legacy was the reason i was a little bit abrasive towards just the idea of brown to begin with ("there's no way i'm following the Stephenson Path of Education, thank you very much") but then i visited last summer and really liked it. (i'm going up to see it in session in october)

it's just my class rank is awfulllllll. i mean i guess the AP scores and stuff helps but top 12% or whatever really isn't that impressive lol.

If you discover when you come visit that you really like Brown, you should apply early.

When admissions officers are asked whether legacies get a big boost, they're answer is often 'not really, unless it's really a special circumstance'. There are three main possibilities for such a special circumstance. First, you could have a relative that has given a lot of money. Second, you could have a relative that has done the school proud by becoming wildly famous. Third, you could be you. The extent of your legacy is very special.
