SAT writing section...

Most top schools do not consider the SAT section or simply do not make sure that you bombed it. Since Brown has been known to generally value very good writers and do actually have a writing "requirement" in the curriculum, does Brown actually consider the writing section of the SAT?

I am asking because I personally got a very good score on the writing section, but on the 1600 scale (not including writing) got a decent score. That said, if Brown considered the writing section as part of the SAT score and did take the score into account in admissions, I might have a slightly better chance of admission.

So, does Brown consider it?

From Collegeboard:

Quote:
SAT or ACT writing component will be used as follows:
For Admission
I'm in a similar situation, so that comes as good news.

thanks kqed...i noticed that all of the colleges i'm looking at say that they use the writing component "for admission." however, do heavily is it considered? and is it given as much weight as the critical reading and math sections?

It matters, but it won't outweigh poor performance in the other two sections. Just like how a high score in M or CR won't cancel out low scores in the other sections.

reports are that it's not that heavily weighted, in general, and certainly not as much as the M and CR. I don't know about Brown specifically, however,

I do know that if you bombed the SAT Writing section and you turn in killer essays (or vice versa), they will think something is up.

seriously?
they'll grow suspicious if an essay for which you have 50 minutes to prepare and write is worse than your actual admissions essay?
that seems awfully unreasonable!

The writing section isn't scored solely on your essay performance. The test explores your skill with grammar and syntax as well; and while the essay isn't a chance to truly think and plan, they score you accordingly. Your performance on a timed essay could be fairly indicative of your writing ability in general.

Many schools have made public statements about how they will use the SAT W. I would recommend anyone who is worried about it google this topic for each school they are applying to separately to see what if anything they have said about it.
