Essay Limits!

I want to do materials science and engineering at Brown University. So, I need to complete the engineering statements. I can do the first two easily. However, the last one has a limit of 3500 characters, and it asks what engineering discipline I'm interested in and why. There is no way I can even come close to 3500 characters. Is this one necessary? It does say "Please discuss that choice if you have one," but I don't want to take a chance by not writing the essay.
