Social Life Question

Whats it like socially at brown? I heard its the most laid back of the ivy's along with dartmouth. Are there a lot of jams? Girls? Parties? I know the question sounds pretty stupid. But dont lie; while applying it did cross your mind atleast once. Also whats the gay/lesbian population like; i heard it was huge. Are more than half the guys gay?

There's everything and anything. There's at least one frat party going on every weekend night and usually some smaller dorm/house parties. If you want, there are also a bunch of popular clubs in Providence if you're into that. As far as jams, I'm not quite sure what you're looking for, but there are student groups that play at the Underground (in Faunce) and I know there are some cool music places if you care to explore Providence. It's what you make of it though. Most of my friends from my dorm don't drink and all have a great time, but a lot of my friends from elsewhere party heavily and also have a great time. You can totally do the fratty college experience if you want, but it isn't the only thing here (though it is aided by pretty lax alcohol policies). No one comes to Brown and finds that what they wanted socially is not here, unless you have really strange ideas of a fun time.

Girls? You really fear that there are no women here? The school is disproportionately female. I'm sure you'll find some of them that you like, here or anywhere else. And no, the gay/lesbian population is not that huge. I think it's safe to say that it's less than ten percent though there is really no way of knowing. If you aren't gay (which I am presuming from the girl question), it won't affect you anyway, unless you are bothered by it, in which case Brown probably isn't the place for you.

Man thanks, thats an awsome reply;
Im a straight male and have nothing wrong with gays, but it does seem daunting and almost uncomfortable when they "supposedly" hugely outweigh the straight males. Atleast its not yale. Coming in as an athlete alot of my friends are signing at huge party/sport schools like Arizona, Ohio State, USC; So I hoped to have atleast some people to relate too. God gave me a brain, but id still be the dumbest person on campus if I do sign .

Haha, Makeee meee Brown.

paradoxical?
More of an oxymoron, as long as we're using big words.

Can you not be smart and a jock at the same time?

BigAl - You can be, it's just not common. I think this is because jocks tend to rely on their athletic abilities, so they don't work on improving their academic/intelligence capabilities. So then you find the "meatheads".

Well, I have a high to mid 80 with a bunch of low 90's... all my classes are ap. and given, I did tank alot of classes like french and music. On the same token I am an international caliber athlete, and look to go pro after my college years. Teachers hate me or love me, simply for the fact that i act like a jock in teh sense of smart ass comments and not beign productive to the highest degree, yet still being relatively succesfull. I had 48 absences in my first semester ap bio class and finished with a 88. Not too shabbyyyy. It is true, I do not work towards improvign my academic capacities, because frankly who cares right now. If I dont get into Brown or any other Ivy, though I probably will, I will simply just get accepted, as i already have, to schools such as northwestern who are FAR more lax about addmissions. Nor am I a meathead of any sort, I have been classified as gifted by my school board, and have been told to be a attractive 6'1 male. Jockkkk, yeaaaaa. Kinda bright and sneaky?? yeaa..

Is this a joke? I'm not impressed at all. Good luck getting into Brown, I think you might need it. Most students here actually want to "work towards improving" our "academic capacities" ---because most students here are brilliant and self-motivated.

Also, I would lose the swagger. It's offensive. I don't care if you break a stereotype if you're this arrogant. Sorry.

There are bigger fish in the sea, despite what your "school board" may have tricked you into believing.

You are thinking about this the wrong way. If most of the guys at Brown are alternate lifestyle, you have less competition!!!

If you find me arrogant, im sorry. Obviously we dont see eye to eye, most athletes are arrogant. Its tough to get ahead if your nice to yoru competion while they try every dirty trick in the book to get ahead of you. I am extremely self-motivated, but in other aspects of life. Does that make you better then me? Maybe. If you had oppertunities to become a proffessional athlete and it was yoru dream, would that not come first to you. Do YOU think its easy to stay focused at school after 2 horus of trainign before school and 3.5 hours of training after shcool coupled with 1.5 hours more of fitness? Starting your homework at 8pm dead tired is not the least bit easy. Im sorry if you find me offensive, but in my life academics is secondary. Frankly, I could not even have to go to university and still make a very respectable living. You probably have no idea what im talking about, youve probably never been in my situation; nor I yours. So I'd rather you not insult me. FYI, I have been accepted to brown. It is my choice though to which school I choose to attend.
