wow. I most definitely sent in an update letter which expressed my interest, but no letter. What gives?

I don't think a response or lack of one means anything. If they got your letter/update when they were not busy, they probably responded. But if the letter got there during the busiest times, maybe they were too busy to respond.

I am assuming from the past posts that if you just addressed the supplemental material for the "Brown admissions board" you didn't receive a letter but it was most likely received and put into your file. I called a school once to make sure they received material and they said that it was added to my file for review.

Since the letter was addressed to the dean I am assuming that was why he sent something back. If the material was sent addressed to a specific person, it is more likely that a confirmation letter would be sent back =)

5 days left people!

Alright...so I am wrong...wouldn't be the first time =) Just know that if it was sent to the right address, they got it and put it in your file

As someone who is around the Admissions Office right now, I can tell you that as it gets closer to the grind, the admissons officers are in committee into the wee hours. I feel kind of bad for them seeing how stressed they are. So as someone mentioned above, it can really depend on how busy your particular person is, how many meetings they had to go to, and how close to the grind they received it. I wouldn't read into it too much.
