Accepted!!!!!

Decision: ACCEPTED!!!!!!!

Stats:
SAT: 2260 M770 CR770 W720 (ewww writing, I got a nine both times, guess I can't spew out bs for the SAT people. Also the second time I took writing, I almost ran over a squirrel on the way to the testing center and was freaked out the whole time, could barely concentrate). (took SATs three times but once was to get accepted into my state semi-public school)
SAT IIs: Math II-720 (hahhahaha I should have done so much better, eh.), English- 770, BioE-800!!!! (I had a great genetics teacher. I took bioM but didn't do as well.)
GPA: 3.76/4
Rank: school does not rank, about 200 kids in each grade, really no idea
Other stats: AP Calc BC-5 (I've had 5 semesters of various calculus topics so it was really easy), AP Eng Lit-5, AP Bio-?? yet to take, AP Spanish-4

Subjective:
Essays: I wrote all of my college essays the week before the duedate. I only let my Brown essays get proofread.

Teacher Recs: my recs were written by the most beastly (read: really hard) teachers in the school, my microbiology teacher and my english teacher that I've had for 5 semesters. I never got to see the recs but my English teacher handwrote recs for each school that I applied to seperately.
Counselor Rec: I switched schools after 9th grade, then had a new cac each year after that. In 11th grade I thought I finally landed a good (compassionate even) cac but she left and some lady replaced her. I've talked to the new one all of three times in my life, but I was polite and things so I bet she wrote something generic.

Hook?: Native Russian speaker, also born in Russia though I didn't write about this. Apparently my writing is moving. I wrote about the open curriculum a lot and exactly why it fit me, so did my bio teacher in my rec (as he says).
State or Country: IL
School Type: semi-public magnet school, every class is "honors".
Ethnicity: Russian
Gender: female

School ECs: umm some SciOly, math team for one year, swim team for one year, was a writer and cartoonist for a student run satire magazine for three years, tutor for refugees that came to the school for one year, environmental club, reading discussion club. Oh yeah I also did research with a professor at a university for two years during the school year, my school has a program that sets us up like that. It was embryogenesis research!

Other ECs: Volunteer work (200+ hours, generally environmental stuff and in my local library), Art school for nine years woo!

Awards: Lots of Science Fair stuff, went to AAAS national science fair conference in San Francisco last year (lots of fun!)

Other Factors: I was going to send in art stuff but I didn't have time to, I visited the campus and mentioned that once, and I didn't do an interview even though everyone in the world pressured me to.
General Comments: I didn't believe it when I checked online and lay down for a bit, but when I got back up IT WAS STILL THERE. JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!

P.S. the acceptance rate was about 7%, omg omg omg.....

ACCEPTED!!!

Stats:
  • ACT: 34 (35R/35W/32M/32S/12 essay)
  • SAT IIs: 800 Chem, 770 US History
  • GPA: 5.1ish/5.3 (weighted)
  • Rank: 2/330
  • Other stats: 5s on AP Chem, Envi Sci, and US History
Subjective:
  • Essays: Could have gone either way... I decided that I was just going to write like myself, and I ended up with an illustrated letter to the admissions officers (which mentioned my desire to become a trapeze artist and my manly middle name). I really ended up liking it, and I think that it helped to get me in.
  • Teacher Recs: One was definitely fantastic, the other one was probably good, but I'm honestly not sure.
  • Counselor Rec: Very good
  • Hook (if any): HA. No hook, at ALL.
Location/Person:
  • State or Country: MA
  • School Type: Semi-competitive public
  • Ethnicity: White female
  • Gender: Female
Other Factors: Music (clarinet and saxophone, radio DJ), sports (varsity XC), community service (town council, volunteering at senior center, Habitat for Humanity, etc.)
General Comments: I'm proof that you don't need to cure cancer to get into Brown. I don't have any national awards, I haven't done award-winning research... I just really, really love what I do do, and I think that that came across in my application. In the end, what got me in was probably my essays, and the fact that my application as a whole reflected who I am. But, honestly, I still can't believe I got in. This was the greatest surprise of my LIFE.

  • Weaknesses: SAT/ACT
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Because God wanted it that way =)
General Comments: I'm very happy with the way all of my decisions turned out. I was accepted to Brown and Dartmouth, and wailtlisted at Yale and rejected from Harvard. All of which were made in the best interest of my future and I'm very happy. I never thought I'd even apply to these schools. =) THANK GOD!

Decision: ACCEPTED!!!!

Stats:

SAT: CR 650, M 780, W 710
SAT IIs: Chem 700, Math II 740, US 780
GPA: (weighted out of 100) 101.58
Rank: Salutatorian
AP: Euro 4, US 5, Chem 4, Stats 4, English 3, Lit, Spanish, Calc BC, US Gov, Bio
Senior/HS Year Course Load: most difficult (haven't had lunch since 9th grade x_x)
Major Awards: Nothing huge, but there were tons of little things that showed personal achievements or dedication to an EC.

Subjective:

Essays: I think the topic I chose was mediocre at best, but I honestly think my essay was candid and true to who I am. Also, a lot of my short essays followed a very close theme/story to my main one, so I was scared of that a bit. However, I tried my best (and succeedeed apparently) in conveying passion. My extracurricular essay was amazing.
Teacher Recs: I waived my right to them, but when I asked my counselor what she thought of my recs, she said they were some of the best she has ever seen.
Counselor Rec: I waived my right to it, but other guidance counselors have said that my counselor's recs are amazing.
Interview: I didn't feel well about my interview at all. Not only was I incredibly uncomfortable, I didn't feel as if I conveyed myself as well as or as thoroughly as I would've liked. I think I also came off as a bit ... fake? in the beginning.
Hook (if any): none

Location/Person:

State or Country: Nassau County, New York
School Type: Public (one of the "worst" districts amongst other amazing districts)
Ethnicity: Korean-American
Gender: male
Income Bracket: ~40K

Reflection:

Strengths: COLLEGE RESEARCH!!
Weaknesses: My SAT scores esp. as an Asian male from a state like NY.
Why I was accepted: I think it was honestly the fact that I was so heavily interested in languages. I thought that that might've canceled out the fact I was an Asian male because most of them/us go for hard sciences or something like that. My course selections (10 courses of another language throughout HS) as some activities clearly showed a clear interest.

Reflection:

Strengths: none? I think essays and recs if anything.
Other factors:

EC: Mathletes (President), Science Honor Society (Sec.), Newspaper (Layout editor, but I quit in first semester of 12th), Quiz Bowl (Co-founder and Capitan), Math Hon. Soc., Tri-M, Spanish, Japanese, and ASL Hon Socs., Marching/Concert Band and Orchestra (1st tuba/Band Capitan), Nat'l Hon. Soc., Class of '08
Sports: Badminton Club in 9th grade, and Girls' Badminton team manager in 12th. (There isn't a boys' team.)
Work: none
Volunteer: 200+ hours at a hospital's local pharmacy. I didn't mention it, but this helped me decide that medicine wasn't for me.
Summer Activities: Basically, this is when I did my hospital hours. I also went to JHU and got an A+/A- in two courses in 5 weeks. I also did CTY during the summer before 9th, but I didn't think that mattered much at all (but this also shows a move away from medicine).

Decision: Accepted !!

Stats:
  • SAT: cr630/m720/wr720(essay12)
  • SAT IIs: math levelII 800/ Physics 720
  • GPA: N/A
  • Rank: N/A
  • Other stats: AP PhysicsC& AP Calc both 5s, TOEFL ibt 108
Subjective:
  • Essays: pretty good( wrote about my experience as an exchange student)
  • Teacher Recs: pretty good
  • Counselor Rec: good
  • Hook (if any): N/A
Location/Person:
  • State or Country: Nanjing, China
  • School Type: Well-known public school
  • Ethnicity: Asian
  • Gender: Female
Other Factors: 1.i EDed Brown/ I spent the most time on Brown's Applications
2. ECs: math team, speech team, girls' volleyball while in Dighton-Rehoboth HS..nothing really impressing kuz i was in DR for only a year and most of the stuff i do at HS in China don't matter as much since Brown probably has no idea what they are anyway.
3. Awards: Southeastern Massachusetts Conference math league: top scorer 2006-07/ Boston Globe scholastic Art Award: Gold key.
4.maybe my art portfolio helped, too( I got in RISD with that portfolio)

General Comments: My test scores weren't really as good as a lot of ppl from my country, well, maybe Brown doesn't look at standarlized scores that much. I truly had great passion for Brown and as an international student I knew about Brown more than most of the ppl around me in my country because I stayed in Rehoboth in my junior year as an exchange student. Rehoboth is pretty close to Brown and I got to visit Brown and Providence a lot; i was really lucky to be able to spend a year in Rehoboth and get such a great experience.
Also, I got in the brown-risd dual degree program and I wonder if i will do well in the program because it seems so intense and difficult. it's great, tho, to get a chance to go to both Brown and RISD, both of which are my favorite colleges.
