2008 Official Brown Waitlist Thread

I didn't post this as a kind of disagreement. I just hope to make myself feel more comfortable by get some good news.

It seems what modestmelody is saying in terms of cross-admits is true, i think Brown this year has relatively accepted more students and waitlisted less than its competitors (eg Harvard/Princeton) so the Brown class got filled up pretty fast. Explains why Harvard and Princeton have gone to waitlists so early, so there's more shuffling of students to be done

The other schools (especially Columbia) like to play a numbers game. They seem to be more prestigious or exclusive if they admit fewer applicants and have a low acceptance rate. The overall acceptance rate that is released does not change based upon their waitlist admits. Thus, they can boast a very low number yet still fill up their class using the waitlist. Brown, on the other hand, doesn't seem to play this game to the same extent. Rather, they attempt to fill their class up and then if they were incorrect about their matriculation estimate, they go to their waitlist. Which method is better is a personal opinion. However, it is for this reason that Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia jumped to their waitlists within days (even less for some) whereas Brown did not.

Yep xmobile, they seem to pride themselves on their superficial "selectivity". Though this isn't a good situation for us Brown waitlisters to be in

I just called Brown. I asked the admissions person: "Are you using the waitlist this year?" She said: "We do not have the information as of yet."

Also, I asked when decisions come out. She said, "At the end of this month."

While Dartmouth has not made a public announcement, I talked to an admissions rep today and she said that it was clear that they reached their target class size and will not be going to their waitlist. They are still keeping it open, however, in case major trickledown occurs with Columbia, Harvard, and Yale, etc.'s waitlists. I'm hoping this won't be the case for Brown too...

remember how i said there might be a waitlist fall out due to HYPSM...looks like its very possible. Harvard is going to take 150 waitlisted kids, Yale 45 ish, Princeton about 90, and Penn about 90 (it could help i guess), so dont compleatly give up hope!

definitely not, because all of those schools will be affected by each other. When Harvard offers a spot to someone on their waitlist, maybe that kid was already going to yale, now he pulls out, yale needs to take another student who was going to commit to Penn, so now Penn takes another kid from the waitlist. Those numbers are probably very close to what they need if no one leaves the current class.

all the ivies will use their lists this year because of harvard. in the absense of early action, harvard waitlisted tons of people they intend to take. these folks will be drawn from the pool of folks who have already accepted at yale, princeton, brown, dartmouth, etc.
in turn, all these schools will have to turn to their waitlists as well to fill the gap.
