Accepted! Can't believe it!

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:
-SAT I (by section):n/a
-SAT IIs: n/a
-ACT: 26
-APs: 1

Short responses: I explained why English, history, and music are my favorite topics and how they relate to each other. On the second response, I wrote about the open curriculum.
-Teacher Recs: Submitted 2, they were closed recommendation letters.
-Counselor Rec: submitted 1, he compared me to a train, always going no matter how high the hill.
-Interview: Yes, that went VERY well, I bet it played a factor.

-State or Country: Wyoming
-School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): about 398
-Ethnicity: Asian
-Gender: F

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.
Intended Major: Psychology

Reflection
Strengths: Essays, personality/individualism, interview, recommendation letters

What you tried to focus on in your application: I concentrated on the question: "What makes me different than other applicants." That question helped me to write innovative and creative responses.

Weaknesses: ACT score

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Who knows? But I'm beyond happy at this point.

S was Wait Listed. Only student from his school to apply to an Ivy League. 32 act, 4.0GPA, #2/133, small rural public school down south. Wrote about saving a baby goat.

As a mom who couldn't afford to send him to Brown (transportation costs alone would be prohibitive), I am so relieved. He wasn't rejected from his favorite school of all time and I don't have to say "no". He can now accept his 2nd favorite school and be satisfied. His response to the wait list was.... "I'll Wait til graduate school, then I'll be there!"

Congrats to all accepted, it is an awesome school. I would like to go there myself.

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:
  • SAT I (by section): 2350 (800 V, 750 M, 800 W 12 essay)
  • SAT IIs: 800 Bio E, 770 Math IIC, 800 US History
  • APs:5's Biology, Calculus AB, English Language, Environmental Science, Spanish Language, US History, World History
  • Rank: 1/520
Subjective:
  • ECs listed on app:
  • Job/Work Experience: Yearbook (copy editor), academic bowl (MVP), service club (secretary), math club (secretary), lit mag (editor), creative writing
  • Essays (subject and responses): Common App essay on calling my relatives in Beijing on Christmas morning. Sort of stream-of-consciousness with embedded song lyrics. Brown supplement essay on studying AP World History in small student-led groups. I think both were a lot better in style than in substance.
  • Teacher Recs: Good? One was from the WHAP teacher whose class I wrote about.
  • Counselor Rec: Good but generic? She doesn't really know me, except as the valedictorian and the token minority among the NMFs.
  • Hook (if any, such as RSI or URM): TASP? Maybe geography.
Location/Person:
  • State or Country: TX
  • School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Large suburban public with mediocre academics, although my class is rockin' college admissions this year.
  • Ethnicity: East Asian
  • Gender: F
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
This is actually bittersweet for me. Brown has been my top choice for forever, but my financial aid package makes it impossible for me to actually go.

Reflection

  • Weaknesses: Leadership, extracurriculars, nothing really outstanding.
  • Why you think you were accepted: I wrote about my student research experiences in my application, and that was mentioned in my acceptance letter!
General Comments: Pretty freak'n sweet.

Objective:

  • Senior Year Course Load: AP Bio, AP Psych, AP Eng Lit, AP Calculus AB, Student Council Officer
  • Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
Subjective:
  • Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Physician Shadowing, Research, StuCo (secretary), NHS, 3 years school baseball, Boy Scouts (senior patrol leader and Eagle Scout)
  • Job/Work Experience: 5 years working as youth baseball umpire, and other employment always/year round
  • Volunteer/Community service: lots. Shoulda kept better track of my hours.
  • Summer Activities: Work, and Native American Youth Initiative program
  • Essays: Really good, but not super original or exciting. About my shadowing.
  • Teacher Recommendation: IDK
  • Counselor Rec: Most likely fantastic
  • Additional Rec: really really good, for PLME, from the Surgeon I shadowed
  • Interview: Not that great
Other
  • Applied for Financial Aid?: yep
  • Intended Major: Cognitive Neuroscience/French Studies
  • State (if domestic applicant): TX
  • Country (if international applicant):
  • School Type: Public Magnet
  • Ethnicity: Native American (obviously not that much help...)
  • Gender: Male
  • Income Bracket: ~130k
  • Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Native American, but once again, didn't help that much obviously.
Reflection
  • Strengths: Courseload (hardest of anyone at my school, I'm certain.
  • What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My passion for science and medicine, as well as that I actually am somewhat related to my tribal heritage. Obviously not good enough.
  • Weaknesses: GPA GPA GPA GPA.
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: SubPar GPA is the only thing I can really think of.
  • Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It seems to me like they really care a lot more about grades than they let on. obviously, because it is the Ivy League, but I guess mine just weren't good enough. It seems like they'd rather you took 5 AP's and have all A's than take 10 AP's and make 4 A's and 6 B's

I was rejected after being deferred ED. My stats are easily found around, don't have the patience to post them again. On the whole, a bit disappointed, but I have great options in front of me and am not going to obsess over it too much.
