Okay so I'm a male athlete and I got a likely letter a few days ago from Brown. What exactly does it mean? The Coach told me that I shouldn't worry anymore but I can't help but be apprehensive. Anyone know anything about these letters?
It means that you will get accepted -- if you do a good job on your application, submit it on time and have an interview with an alum if asked. While there have been athletes who got likely letters and didn't get accepted, it is rare -- they had to have messed something up (like obnoxiously refused to have an interview).
^^Yes. you basically just have to go through the motions now and you will be in good shape. Make sure you don't screw up senior year I guess, or do dumb stuff on your essays or whatever. Congrats.
Well I can't mess up on anything having to do with my application because they saw it already. To get a likely letter, they must have viewed your entire application.
Basically it means don't get busted for drugs stronger than marijuana (or any drugs on multiple occasions), commit a felony, or assault someone and pass all of your classes with at least a B and you will be accepted.
You might want to check out the forum for athletic recruits (listed as specialty forum under College Admissions Forum). There is a lengthy thread there about the reliability of likely letters.
Congratulations! You can depend upon the likely letter.
However, as Amadeuic states above, behave yourself for the rest of the year. Continue performing at your current level academically, avoid any brushes with the law (DUIs, graduation party blunders), avoid suspensions (no class pranks).
