Yes, Another Chance Thread! [[Brown ED]]

Hello all! I decided to make one of these too. We all feel like a community here and I wanted to share and get some feedback. Brown EDers of 2010!

Private, very competitive school in the Mid-Atlantic (sends many grads to ivies)
White female, high income bracket
GPA: 3.84 (my weakest point. All poor grades were soph. year (a B- and a B) and all of my midterms this year are As!)
SAT: 2300 (CR:800,W:780,M:720)
SAT IIs: World: 760, Lit: 760, US: 740
AP/IB: US: 5 Euro: 5 English Comp: 5 Art His: 5 Spanish (IB): 6 (I got the AP Scholar with Honor award)
Course load: Full IB, have/will have taken about 10 APs
Class does not rank, GPAs are not released.

EC Activities (Summary):
Editor-in-Chief Lit Mag
Editor of school paper
President of GSA
Head of Operations Mock Trial
Varsity Quizbowl Team Member
Tech Club for shows at school
Write for: a statewide publication (also on editorial board), a national publication, and a local news publication (also an intern)
Published in a few places, have won two writing awards, one statewide and one on a smaller national scale
Been selected to be in some selective summer writing workshops, have attended four different workshops over my summers
Intern at gay rights center over the summer
Good community service

Majors: Gender and Sexuality and Literary Arts

My essays were very, very good. I also submitted a supplement of my poetry and the abstract of an extended research paper I did on a gender and sexuality topic. My teacher recs and cons. rec should all be good.

What do you guys think?

I'm no person who would chance well but a 3.84 is a good gpa. And you seem devoted to what you want to do so you seem pretty good

I think a 3.84 falls on the weaker side though. :/ It's what I'm worried about. That and the fact that other kids from my school are applying there ED.

not necessarily (if thats a bad grade, then im screwed) but the average gpa for these schools are around 3.7, meaning there are many over but many under that range as well

I'm pretty sure it's not 3.7.
There aren't published average GPAs for Brown, but schools that compare, like Wesleyan's for example, is 3.95. These may be skewed though (leaving out recruited atheletes etc).

Damn. Your credentials are very, very similar to mine. (And I hope that's a good thing). Just curious: what summer workshops did you attend?

Kenyon Young Writer's Workshop, Duke TIP Ghost Ranch, Columbia Journalism, Simon Rock College of Bard's Workshop.

I chose to go with the less prestigious school names in exchange for higher quality programs. In my opinion, the summer at fill in the blank are a waste of money because anyone can get into them. *shrug*

You have a very good shot at being accepted to Brown based on what you have posted. You're a very qualified candidate but the only issue is there are many "very qualified candidates" out there. I really think applying to any top school without some sort of hook is always somewhat of a lottery. With that being said, I would not be surprised if you were accepted but at the same time I would not be surprised if you got deferred/rejected because of the competition out there. You set yourself up very well but it's now in the hands of the admissions office. Good luck and try to enjoy the rest of your senior year because there isn't much you can do now.

Sweet! I went to Simon Rock's workshop, too! What year did you attend? I went in 2008.
