Questions regarding Fall Break/Parents Weekend

Hi,

I'm the proud parent of an entering Freshman at BMC. Since we come from the West Coast, we need to plan fairly early for travel (or maybe it's just me!).

I know there is a 10 day or so Fall Break, apparently from Oct. 12-22. Do most people go home during that time? There doesn't seem to be any of the food services open then. If you're on Work Study, are you expected to work during that period?

Also, does parents' weekends normally start on Fridays in the AM and end on Sundays in the PM? Just wondering because we usually need to add a day on either side for travel from CA.

Thanks for any tips from those of you who have been through this already!

I am a member of the class of 2011 too.

As most freshman work for dining services, students are not expected to work while the dining halls are closed.

I don't know how many students actually stay on campus during fall break. I will, purely for financial reasons.

Hi Erin's mom..

As a parent, here's the scoop on fall break as far as i remember..."most" students go home, but not all, especially the ones that live on west coast, and certainly the internationals. So, if your daughter chooses to stay, she will not be alone. Dining services are closed, but there are a bunch of local places where the kids can eat (or for breakfast keep stuff like cereal, muffins, in the "tea pantry" - hall kitchenette. You are NOT expected to do work study then. BTW a nice thing about BMC is that most freshman do work study whether they need to financially or not; it is a unifying experience.

I believe the parents wkends start Fri afternoon and end early Sunday - after brunch. You are free to go to as much or little as you like. We went up on Saturday, and did the Sat afternoon activities (especially liked going to a few classes taught by excellent profs). We left sunday about 12, after breakfast. Sat nite we had dinner with our daughter's roomate's parents; after that we attended a very good concert by the BMC/HC orchestra. Some kids who have been there a few years already spend the time exploring Philly with their parents and stocking up on stuff! - i think the activities mostly for parents of Frosh, though i dont know for sure who was attending what.

So, make your travel arrangements what's most convenient for you. Its a relaxing time mostly; its fun to look around, meet your kid's friends, etc.

Welcome to BMC b@r!um!
