Welcome New College Rep, BMC_Official Rep from Bryn Mawr College

Please join me in welcoming our newest College Rep, BMC_Official Rep from Bryn Mawr College!

(As a reminder, we have taken reasonable steps to verify that our College Rep members are indeed who they claim to be. If you encounter anyone in the community who claims to be from a college's admissions office but isn't designated as a College Rep, please let us know and be wary of any advice provided before that person is so designated.)

Stop in and say hello in this thread, but please do NOT use this thread to ask questions - start a new thread with an appropriate title. In addition, since our College Reps are busy people, please do NOT start threads asking for help specifically from the Rep - please post the query to the community in general, and you'll be likely to get multiple informed views on the subject. If the College Rep can provide useful input, no doubt he/she will chime in.

Welcome, BMC_Official Rep!

I'm a former Smith admission counselor, so it's great to see another "Sister" on CC.

This is great. My daughter asked me to print out the Bryn Mawr Classics Department website info for her and to register her for the seminar days coming up. Perhaps it's an omen?
Seriously, welcome!

Congrats on a fine college choice, froghorn.

I never considered Bryn Mawr because I grew up in the Philly 'burbs and wanted to go away to college, but I have a number of friends who are BMC alums and really valued their experience there.

Thanks, I am very excited about it! I really like the area but can definitely understand the desire to move on; I live in the town adjacent to Wellesley which was one of the over-powering factors in my decision to decline admission. I continue to be impressed by BMC and other Sister grads; I wish more people looked at the Sisters.

Welcome Welcome!!
I'm another excited upcoming freshwoman!
It's exciting to have someone official speaking!

By the way, Sally, I was accepted to Smith as well this year and thought it was fabulous! I have several friends going there! It came down to the reputation of my intended major program and proximity to big city/ home (I'm from the D.C. area). Nevertheless, you chose a great school to work for!

Thanks, emma problema. I'll pass along your kind words about Smith to my old pals in the admission office. I'm sure they're sorry that they didn't snag you, but at least they will take some comfort in the fact that you'll be at another Sister School. (They'll also want to know which program at Bryn Mawr you thought was a better fit for you ... are you telling?)

Best wishes for a great BMC experience.

Smith

Sally_Rubenstone, my D received a book award from Smith. As a former Smith admission counselor, do you still think Smith is one of the top LACs? Thanks.

sd_dolphins--Since I live across the street from Smith and walk or jog on the campus almost daily, I often can't resist the urge to grill the students I encounter about their Smith experiences (and all of my "victims" have been polite enough to endure these interrogations ). I have been very impressed with the very positive responses I've gotten. Students tell me that their classes are small, as advertised, and that they really get to know their professors.

Some are not thrilled with the social-life options at a single-sex school, but most don't consider this limitation to be a deal-breaker. (Some, of course, do and they transfer.) Two students I know of who spent junior terms abroad (one in London and one at Wesleyan on an exchange program) both effused about their wonderful time away but also expressed eagerness to get back to Smith.

Smith students also seem to do well when it comes to job and grad-school placements.

So, yes, I would definitely call Smith one of the top LAC's.
