Applied Economics

* This post is for my friend.

My friend wants to major in applied economics, but the thing is it is in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resources. Here is the "four-year plan." I told her that she could still work in a business/downtown in the future, but she fears that the degree will only open her to agribusiness, etc. Do you guys think this degree is good? I also suggested that she could transfer to Economics in the College of Liberal Arts if it doesn't work out.

Thanks!

Economics (applied or otherwise) is social science not business. If your friend is interested in business, she should consider transferring to the Carlson school and completing one of their programs. That said, here is a list of recent positions taken by ApEc graduates.

Yeah, I showed her that too. Thanks. I think she did not get into the Carlson MGMT school. I think applied econ may even be better than the Econ degree since it offers Carlson and technical courses. But, I don't know lol.

Last bump, haha...

Also, my friend is considering double majoring in Chinese, as she intends to someway be involved with China when she graduates.

Or should she just minor/double major in another useful discipline such as statistics? She would still take Mandarin, but not all the other requirements that go with the major (like China's history, for example).

Passing the LPE would put a designation on her transcript. Might be useful.

Okay, one more question.

She recently met with an advisor and will start with her applied economics major course in the beginning of her freshman year (a lot of dual enrolled credits U of M). She was wondering what courses/majors/minors should she supplement with applied economics to ensure that she will receive internships and job offers in the finance/banking industry?
