Future in Marketing?

I'll be starting college in the fall at UNI. It has a good reputation for their business school. At the moment, my major is specified as marketing. I've always like researching, and being able to be creative seems like a good idea for me.

However, I've heard marketing is not much of a business degree. How does a marketing degree stack up against other business degrees? Does a marketing degree earn less? What earns the most?

I'm good at math, good with people and am very involved, so a different or more difficult major probably wouldn't be a huge issue for me. Any suggestions? Should I change my major?

Marketing does earn less and many of the jobs are just sales, but marketing research is at the top for marketing and closer to the other majors.

Marketing research is just about the most boring marketing job one can get. Marketing is definitely a "business degree" but starting salaries are definitely lower than finance/accounting/MIS.

Even so, graduates of MBA programs make good money as brand managers (a marketing position). However, you do not necessarily need a marketing background (either undergrad or post graduate work experience) to get a job like that (just an MBA with a focus in marketing).

Assuming you will eventually go on for an MBA, it won't matter. However, if you have the option of marrying the marketing to finance (dual or double major, or finance minor) that can be good.

Management is a little trickier because many of the mgt skills taught in school aren't hard skills and can be learned on the job. Additionall, it is rare to come from undergrad and move right into undergrad. I would check with your school's career services to see avg mgt salaries and more importantly, the types of jobs mgt students get. A mgt degree from a good school could be a good route to get into mgt consulting. However, a mgt degree from a lesser school could be relatively worthless.
