Accounting major with a computer science minor?

I am going to start my college experience in the fall and i am going to major in accounting through Xavier University's 5 year MBA program and i am considering minoring in computer science. any thoughts? good idea? bad idea? i was thinking it would be a very good way to get ahead in a society that is relying more and more on technology every year. please only respond if you know what your talking about as i am looking for serious help. thanks!

I think that having a CS minor with accounting could probably be good for getting into the IT auditing industry (either minor/major in CS or major in MIS/information systems can both be used to enter this industry). I hear that this is a good career path to take, although I'd ask taxguy or VectorWega about just what opportunities/how lucrative this industry is. If you get info from them though I'd appreciate if you can tell me as well since I'm interested in this field potentially. Thanks.

Why is it a bad idea?...what's the problem with entering the workforce with an mba instead of just a bachelor's?...it seems like it would put me ahead since I wouldnt need to return for my mba later in life...

because an mba is good with networking and has value once you already have some work experience.

Many people return for their MBA because:

a) They want a career change
b) They want access to more lucrative "top jobs" (Strategy Consulting, IB, PE, VC, etc)
c) They want to progress in their current line of work

By getting an MBA right out of undergrad, u will lose the value created by having the options of A and B. Even with C, you may be stuck at a dead end job that you aren't goin to progress in even with your MBA, and you could have been better suited to return to get an MBA at that time and have access to more employers in your field.

You would have the MBA title which could be useful if it was necessary for a certain job, but overall that value is very limited.

So you think it would be a better idea to just go ahead and major in accounting, go into the workforce and then play it by ear as far as going back for an mba is concerned?

The value of a top MBA is ten times the value of a mediocre one. And top MBA programs accept very few straight out of college. There's a lot of proof that an average MBA gotten without significant prior work experience will not raise job prospects or earnings one cent.

This is pretty much why you wait for a good program.

I see. hey thanks alot to everyone that has posted feedback on this page! I am just getting ready to start the big intimidating college experience and it's really cool that there are people like you that take the time to help out with the unanswered questions of students like me. I appreciate all of your help and I'll probably have a few more questions under the 'business major' category so keep me posted if you see my questions!
