Accounting Recruiting from Out of State

I'm a New York City resident and I'm currently a freshman @ Penn State University. I plan on living in NYC and I was wondering if it would be better for me to go to school in the state of NY [like say Baruch or Binghamton] instead of PA because I've heard that recruiters usually look for people to work in state? Also if I do get my undergraduate degree from PSU, I should take the CPA in NY right?

ihatecollegeapps. Although partners at firms usually interview at local schools, it is very possible and even probable that you can get a job elsewhere if you

1. Have a very strong accounting GPA
2. Call up the firms for interviews.

I went to school in NY ( Baruch) and got a job with a national accounting firm in Florida. All it takes is to call them for an interview. You do have to be a bit more self motivated if you want to work at a firm in a different state from your school, but it is VERY doable.

Be sure, however, that your educational program will meet the out of state standards necessary to qualify to take the CPA exam in the state that you want to work in.
