How many schools to apply to

How many business schools do you think is the "normal" amount to apply to? I know for my undergraduate I only applied to one, but I knew I would be accepted. Since I am less confident about being accepted into a top MBA program, how many "safety schools" should I apply to? How many did you apply to?

6 to 12 is a good number

mba programs take a bit more time to apply to than undergad, 12 is absurdely high. People I've known generally go for 3-6.

Personally, I'm applying to 5. Was originally going to apply to 6, but decided against it, because of how much work is needed. It's on average 4 essays per school, and you have to worry about your resume and recommendation letters. It's a lot of work. This means that school selection is very important.
