Quantity/Quality of work experience for MBAs

I am currently a senior in a bachelor's engineering program and plan on applying for an MBA down the road. I was just wondering what kind of work experience was required, specifically:-

1) Amount of years of work experience
2) Quality of work experience

I browsed through class profiles of some top 20 MBA programs and most listed a median of 4-5 years work experience. I was just curious...

1) What is the optimal #years of work experience based on your experiences?
2) When is it advantageous to apply for an MBA after 1-2 years of work compared to 4-5 years of work?

Any inputs would be appreciated or if someone could refer me to another thread that discusses my questions, that would be appreciated as well!

- Thanks
