question about visiting the campus

I may be visiting the school soon and was just wondering it its possible to walk around the campus myself with my family around the school or do i have to be in a tour group. does the tour group usually have a lot of people or is it usually just one family cuz i don't really feel comfortable being the only family in the tour group lol.

Yes you may walk around the campus with your family at any time. It is a great way to see everything. Be sure to plan on having lunch there so you can get a feel for the campus dynamics. However i would strongly suggest that you also take a formal tour with a guide. They may have some planned tours with a number of people in the group, or it may just be YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. I know it's kind of awkward but it is the best way to see everything and have a chance to ask questions. They also may be able to get you in to see a dorm room which you can't do on your own unless you know someone. Good Luck!!!!!! It is a great campus!!!

My D and I parked in front of the apartments about a block from the campus. It was on a Sunday. We toured the campus on our own. We visited the library, student union, and explored the journalism dept. It was exhausting but fun!

Cal Poly has an all volunteer, all student, very friendly army of tour guides. From the website you can sign up for a tour, or get maps etc. for a self tour. Best is to go on the organized tour with your family, then split up, explore on your own and meet a few hours later. Weekday parking is highly restricted but there is a staffed booth right at the side of the entrance where you can get a parking permit and maps. There is an open house weekend in April, a good way to learn about the school, but it's not the same "feel" as visiting the school when it's business as usual. Also the campus has an 'open door' policy, you and your family can enter (quietly) and sit in on any classroom with an open door.
Go, explore and have fun!

re parking: when you come through the kiosk tell the atendant that you are visiting and he/she will give you a parking pass for the first lot you see. It's a short walk from there to the admissions office or the student union. Enjoy your visit. Don't miss the bowling alley the pizza or the smoothies. They have an "open door " policy so if you walk through any of the buildings and see a classs in session through an open door you can go in and observe. The tour we went on really just went around that central loop of campus so if you get a map and do your research on the website you will possibly get as much out of it as the guided tour.
