Out of State Reputation

I live in California and so Cal Poly is definitely a known school and has a really good reputation with a lot of high school kids that want to go there. One complaint I have heard with Cal Poly is that people don't know it outside of California and that can hurt when you try to get a job. For those who live out of state what kind of reputation does Cal Poly have were you live?

From what i heard, Cal Poly is well known outside of California for Engineering and Architecture. But for the rest of the majors, I'm not sure.

I spent some time in DC and most people over there knew it was a good school. There are a lot of West Coast transplants out there, so that's part of the reason.

out of state reputation

My son is planning to go the architecture school next year, we live just outside DC and he applied and got into every school and chose Cal Poly for the reputation for architecture...he does get frustrated when he is asked where he is going and he says "cal poly" and there is a "Duh" expression on everyones face. But I bet wherever you live everyone knows the instate schools (I mean have you heard of James Madison?) University of...is a given. But at least for architecture and engineering it is WELL known and respected worldwide. We questioned some practicing architects and they all said cal poly over cornell.

My son is going to Cal Poly for engineering in the fall. We live in Colorado, and most people here seem to have the impression that it is a very good school. I think it is pretty well known for engineering and architecture, as logicaldog said. I got the impression when my son and I visited that engineering students were highly recruited by California companies, but maybe not as much by companies in other parts of the country, although I could be wrong.
