Engineering at SLO

I really want to study Mechanical Engineering at SLO.
But knowing the fact that ME is the most competitive engineering major and the fact that I won't have much chance to get in as a ME,
I was thinking about applying for some other engineering major and then change to ME.

Do you guys think that will be difficult?

and How hard is it to get into SLO?

I'd say it's not impossible, especially if you can get accepted anywhere into the College of Engineering. Only about of half of those who enter Engineering at CPSLO actually graduate in Engineering, so all those people dropping out (or changing their major) create *some* openings in engineering majors.

The requirements to transfer into ME can be found here:
College of Engineering Advising Center - Changing Majors into ME

If you really want to go this route you will need to complete the following courses with a minimum GPA of 2.75.

Math 141, Chem 124, Math 142, Phys 131, Chem 125, Math 143 and Phys 132.

Most of these are required courses for all engineering majors, so you would be taking them anyway.

The best thing you can do to increase your chances of changing your major into ME is to get a head start on these classes by passing the appropriate AP exams or taking the equivalent courses at your local community college (with good grades). Equivalent CC courses can be found at www.assist.org .

Cal Poly is putting an increased emphasis on graduating in 4 years, so you would want to change as soon as possible so as not to fall very behind in the ME series.

Here is the flow chart for ME:
http://eadvise.calpoly.edu/policy/fo...ow%20Chart.pdf

If you start out in a different engineering major, take courses that help you keep up with the ME flow chart. Some ME courses might be restricted to ME majors, so you would want to change ASAP. Good Luck.

thank you, i have another question.

What are some not popular engineering majors available at CPSLO?

I think that I should apply for something not popular and change to ME..

Here is a link to the 2007 fact book: (couldn't find the 2008 version)

http://www.ipa.calpoly.edu/factbook/fbfall07.pdf

College of Engineering Statistics start on p. 43.

It looks like for entering freshmen the lowest numbers are in manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, and environmental engineering.

Here's the 2008 version: http://www.ipa.calpoly.edu/factbook/fbfall08.pdf

(secret trick; change the 07 to 08 in the URL. This worked for PSAT scores on the College Board site one year as well).
