Went to Cal Poly for another visit today

My son and our whole family went to SLO today to walk around and see how it felt to be an accepted student at Cal Poly. His little sister hadn't seen the campus and she really wanted to see the famous wall of gum downtown. (Yuck by the way!)

The weather was beautiful and warm, but a little windy. There were not a lot of students out and about on campus on a Sunday, but Downtown was pretty lively. There are a lot of cute restaurants and bars there. There are also a lot of students and families.

We walked around the Cerro Vista apartment dorms because that is where my son is going to apply to live. We love the idea of him having his own room and 3 roommates that share a kitchen and living room. He liked the community room too and of course the view. We wish we were brave enough to ask someone to let us see inside a room, but truthfully, we only saw a handful of people outside of the dorms.

The campus is just the right size and easy to get around. Everything looks clean and nice. We saw students playing frisbee, studying in the library and walking around campus in groups of 3-5 students.

I think my son will be accepting admission and applying so he can sign up for housing. he will very likely attend slo, but will also think about the other schools that he gets accepted to.

The next time we visit will most likely be for Open House on April 16th.

I hope you all took the time to add your contribution onto the wall of gum.
Glad you and your family enjoyed SLO. I really hope I get in...love it there.

I had forgotten that your son was going to apply for Cerro Vista. Now that sounds like a perfect arrangement for my daughter's friend who just got accepted. This girl is adamant about NOT living in a small dorm with a multi-shared bathroom. We took her along on a few college tours and she definitely preferred the suite-type residence halls better than the other kind. An apartment like this sounds even better. While I know my own daughter would do just fine in someplace like this, I'm really hoping she'll live in a traditional dorm her freshman year. But, Cerro Vista definitely sounds nice!

I'm glad your day went well! Great weather for it.

My son isn't really adamant about not living in a traditional dorm, but I just know his personality and I think he would like the opportunity to have his own room and less people sharing a bathroom. he likes to study late at night and have his computer, music, guitar, tv and such available for short breaks. he is also a big snacker and not a really big meal kid, so having a kitchen and more room to keep snacks will be nice.
He is an excellent guitarist and he needs to have his guitar and amp in a secure place. being able to play in his own room and lock it up when he leaves is great. He wants to be social and hopes that having 3 roommates and a community room will help. he also likes his own space. It sounds like the best place for him. He does think having a main hallway sounds good to though and he would miss that. The red bricks were just too small for a kid who is 6'3". the ceilings in the hallways were low.

I am glad to hear that evryone has a different idea of what is best for them. This way, hopefully everyone gets what they want and will be happy!
