Caltech pop culture references and factoids

Was inspired by a thread of the same about Stanford, Caltech has more, I think.

I can think of a couple off the top of my head;
Feynman
Pauling
Big Bang Theory
Numbers
the Einstein Suite at the Athenaeum (actually got to sleep in the room next door once)

Anyone else??

Very old Hitchcock movie, Torn Curtain, with Paul Newman a Caltech grad, and Julie Andrews. Newman was sent into E Germanyto view a prof's work. Supposedly, he had photographic memory.

Richter. Not many may know who Charles Richter was, but let there be an earthquake and the Richter scale is mentioned on every news show.

More abstract was Benoît Mandelbrot, who came up with fractals. Fractals have many many uses today but it is only a few would know the connection.

In computer industry, Moore's law has defined the trend in innovation in the semi-conductor industry for half a century. Gordon Moore, founder of Intel was a Caltech Ph.D.

^ and I believe his 600 million dollar gift to Caltech is still the largest individual gift to any university-ever.

Arnold Beckman (who invented the pH meter) obviously donated alot of money too, hence the auditorium and institute.

Also seems like everytime there is an earthquake anywhere in the world there is at least one national interview on campus.

The Mars Rover Curiosity is currently spelling out "JPL JPL JPL" on the surface of Mars. The tread of the tires on Curiosity have "JPL" in Morse Code as the tread pattern, which they use to measure distance traveled by the rover. JPL is a division of Caltech.
