Creating E-Mail?

Hello, I am an incoming undergraduate student for year 06~07. I am anxious to create my email account for Caltech, but I have no idea how to. Can someone please help me?

You'll get information from ITS (probably in a huge packet in the mail with other stuff) about that. You probably won't get your Caltech email until near the end of the summer. My year we didn't even get it until we arrived on campus.

That packet does give us an address to submit our username preferences: http://www.imss.caltech.edu/accounts/newstudent.html, with a deadline for this of August 18.

(I just checked that address, and apparently it's moved to http://www.imss.caltech.edu/cms.php?..._op=view&id=30)

It warns that the username should be formal, name-related and everything, and that it's going to go on resumes...I don't know, though, I'm really tempted to do zoogies for a username. Would employers really look down on that?

Quite possibly... it's somewhat unprofessional, probably wouldn't make or break your job application/research application/whatever, but you want to give a good, professional first impression for most of these things. However, your caltech username doesn't have to be the one you use for resumes and everything. It's a good idea to have at least one "formal" email address, but it doesn't matter which one. I use my caltech email (which is of the form lastnamefirstinitial@caltech) for pretty much everything, but I know people who use a gmail account for formal purposes, and have an informal caltech email.

It's not that much of a concern, because you can also get aliases. Also, on UGCS, you get accounts for life and you can create arbitrarily many aliases as you like.

Also, most people don't seem to know this, but you can get an email from the student run computing group, UGCS. name@ugcs.caltech.edu

Just check out www.ugcs.caltech.edu
