UT Austin

What would it take for a Ontario high school student, or any Canadian student to have a amazing shot at getting into UT Austin? What SAT scores, what percent average, and what subject tests scores? I want to know if UT Austin is a reach or a match for me.

anyone? Not going to hold you to your word, but what would an international applicant need to be VERY competitive for UTexas at Austin? If I don't get into HYP and the other big schools that I'll apply to, then UTexas is my definite next choice. Be brutally honest in the stats that I need.

Keep in mind that it is a state school and loves its state applicants and almost all are from Texas, so give me brutally honest numbers that I need to get.

anyone know? Rough estimate? I don't know what these large state schools need in terms of SAT scores. I only know what HYP and those top schools need,

Here's the deal.
I am a Canadian but I live in Texas and will graduate in May.
UT Austin is pretty damn hard to get into if you don't graduate in the top ten percent from a Texan school, because everyone here wants to go there and you automatically get accepted if you are in the top 10. I applied, will probably be rejected(I screwed up my junior year :P) I have a 4.0 weighted GPA and a 3.4 unweighted GPA, not that it means much to you. lol
Anyways, there isn't necessarily a "set" score you need to get on your SATs, I got an 1720 and that is pretty average for a UT student.
Have you applied?
You know the deadline was in Dec, right?

I am applying next yr. So, Erika you have established Texas residency right? I will also be considered as an in-state applicant (long story). So, do you think this would make it much easier to get into UT-Austin?

Thanks for the link prjiki. This is what it says:

Automatically Admitted Texas Students:

* SAT Critical Reading & Mathematics: 1211
* ACT Composite: 26

Non-top 10% Texas Students:

* SAT Critical Reading & Mathematics: 1271
* ACT Composite: 28

Out-of-State Students:

* SAT 1313 (critical reading & mathematics)
* 29 (ACT composite)

International Students:

* SAT 1186 (critical reading & mathematics)
* 24 (ACT composite)

So, I will be applying as an in-state but won't qualify for the top 10% rule, since i go to Can. high school. So, I will fall under Non Top 10% Texas Students I guess? And those scores are kinda low, I agree prjiki. I saw this on their site before, but it seemed misleading....

Viggy-- you've been curious about this for awhile. Why don't you just send an email or call UT Austin and get their information? I often wonder why so many ask kids in highschool on CC when they could quickly get a better answer from the school itself?

i called them about the residency and figured out that I would indeed by considered in-state and would have to fill out an application form that is the same as the ones that Texas high school students would fill out.

I just didn't want to call them and ask "Would I probably get in with these stats?". Like, I thought that might be kinda weird. But, I think I'll call them after I write the SAT for real and then get an idea of where I stand. I posted this just to see if anyone from Canada applied/thought of applying/knows about the whole residency thing.

I know what you mean. I just think you are such a unique case, that it would be hard for any one to have had your particular experience on here.

They won't tell you if you will get in of course, but if you email the admissions folks, maybe they can tell you where you belong in terms of which stat pool. In other words, should your reference point be international admits? instate? out of state? And how do they convert Canadian % grades to GPA (if relevant for you).

Okay, I see. Yeah, that might make it easier to get into. These Texans down here are crazy about their state schools. lol. I got into A&M and I have a little bit of a chance to get into UT and my stats are pretty damn low so I am sure you will be fine.

@Erika, I think I'm basically in the same situation as you, since I'll be filling out the same app. as students from Texas. But still, I need to find out which stat category applies to me.

And would everyone try to rank these schools based on:

-quality of education
-premed facilities/teachers/opportunities
-chance to get a high GPA while keeping my sanity (i know a high GPA anywhere is hard, but I don't want to have to work a ridiculous amount more at one school compared to another)
-reputation (in and out of the state)
-and other perks, advantages/disadvantages

The schools:
1. UT
2. Rice
3. Baylor
4. Texas A&M

lol im a texas student applying to universitys in ontario

at a college visit:
85% of their freshman pool is top 10 kids from texas
and like ~10% is for the kids not in top 10
it leaves like ~2-5% for international/ Out of state kids.
you have to be really really competitive to get in UT if you're OOS and really really really good if your international

also it depends on your school. Business or Engineering? Fat chance they take only the top 2% of kids in texas.

@thegoogler: I will be considered in state though. That's what's confusing, trying to figure out which stat pool I should be looking at. I have established Texas residency, so I will fill out the exact same form as Texas residents and everything. I just need to figure which stat pool I would look at, because that top10% won't apply for me, but I am in top 1% at my current school. You can PM me if you have any q's about Ontario universities, btw. I will be in Natural Sciences at UT and in a bio program at any school I apply to.

and thegoogler, or anyone else, could you rank the schools in post #12 based on the criteria I posted please?

Hey yea I have a question, why does the OUAC cost so freaking much? Seriously I spent almost 300 bucks on 2 apps!!!

and which UofT campus is best? for sciences, chem, bio?
