Uh-oh

Does anyone know if Carleton overenrolled this year? I ask because there's a thread on the Grinnell forum (yeah, I'm going to Carleton, but old CC habits die hard) which says that Grinnell is turning away students who mailed their deposits in after May 1.

I mailed mine April 25, but put simply, is there any way overenrollment might prevent me from going to Carleton next year? I was named a William Carleton scholar, so I know the school wanted me, but since I sent in my deposit so soon before the deadline...

Sorry if this seems paranoid/trivial/ignorant about the way college works. I realize that these people sent in their deposits after the May 1 deadline, but still... it's just that I'm very excited for Carleton and would hate to be unable to go.

Uh, don't worry about it. Carleton didn't stop any of the 50 or so extra enrollees in fall 2005 from coming here.

IzzyD,
If you mailed your acceptance on 4/25, you are fine. As long as it was postmarked by 5/1, which it was, they will take you, even if they over-enrolled. They over-enrolled a few years ago and they found a place for everyone. If you haven't already, you should be getting a Carleton College window decal in the mail. That'll make it feel all official.

IzzyD,

I was worried if my check reached Carleton for son's deposit - then saw online that the check had cleared. I felt much better. Try checking your bank . . . if your able to online.

They sent me a confirmation letter with a final report form and a car sticker about 2 weeks after I sent my deposit.

Once you get this, and I'm sure you will, you can relax imo...

If you don't want to wait and are still worried, go with kimfred's suggestion.

Thanks for the reassurance, guys. I ended up calling Carleton this morning, and they said that they are absolutely not turning away anyone who postmarked their deposit by May 1. My classy car decal will be coming mid-May...

Thanks again, and sorry to have flipped out on y'all.

I'm very curious as to the truth of that posting on the Grinnell forum; it sounds very suspect to me.

Enjoy the decal!

Yeah, did you see it? I guess it somewhat makes sense in retrospect, because if someone mailed their deposit in after May 1, he/she technically didn't abide by the rules and therefore shouldn't count on getting a place, but still... it seems very weird that a school would do that to someone they wanted and admitted.

I mailed my daughter's deposit on Monday, April 28 and the car decal arrived yesterday. Now my wife and I are fighting over which vehicle to put it on ... my daughter isn't taking sides, just smiling. So ... what do you all think? Put it on a van, the ol' family taxi, or on a Mini Cooper that everybody stares at?

Oh, yes--Mini Cooper all the way! (Buy one for the van when you drop your daughter off in Sept. Or order one from the bookstore on-line.)

But there are several different styles of car stickers available and I can never make up my mind.

There are a couple of times each year that the bookstore has a sale - keep a list of things you want ready.

Ha! The MINI is mine ... and I'm definitely printing a copy of this thread and showing it to my wife. This will be a class act all the way ... I'll put the Carleton decal just above my bumper sticker "More Trees, Less Bush".

Last spring, I slapped our Carleton decal on the interior back window of my '98 Subaru Forester--directly above my "Support Our Troops, Bring Them Home" sticker. After someone rather savagely keyed that one, along with my entire bumper, I replaced it with "Obama for President," along with a peace symbol sticker. Guess I'm just a defiant old hippie.
