D is currently in Spanish 3H in 11th grade. She does not want to take AP Spanish next year. Carleton is currently her first choice. It appears from the website that she can place out of the language reqt if she gets a 690 or better on the SAT II - is that right?

I don't see why it wouldn't be right.... otherwise she can take the language placement test during the summer or upon arrival.

bingle, she can, as GerberDaisy suggests, just take the language placement test when she gets to Carleton. Depending on how she does on that, she'd probably either be done with language (if she wants) or close to it.

The problem is that she's a jr, so she'll have over a year of forgetting before taken the placement exam (assuming of course that she gets in and decides to go, LOL). C is her first choice, but she's not thrilled at having to take a language. Yeah, I'm probably a teeny bit too involved at this point

bingle ~ Would your daughter be interested in learning another language? My D took 4 years of HS Spanish and did not want to continue to the AP level. So no Spanish senior year. Once she learned that the colleges she was interested in had language requirements, she decided to switch to a new language. She did not take the placement test and started her freshman year at Carleton in French 101. Several times during her 4 continuous terms of French she considered getting a certificate (like a minor) as she really enjoyed her courses and loved the professors.

Edit: Oops, I see that you said your D did not want to take a language (assume ANY language). There are fabulous language profs at Carleton. Perhaps she will be as inspired as mine was.

Maize&Blue - what did your daughter end up majoring in? My niece went in with Latin under her belt, so she started Greek when she got there. She ended up a Classics/Soc dbl major. Her sister went in fluent in Spanish, but wanted to try something completely different so she took up Japanese. She just got a Japanese linguistics special major approved. (Maybe this should be on the "college degrees don't help you get a job thread, LOL).
My d is the science/math type - currently thinking about Neuroscience or some other bio-type major. She just looked over my shoulder and tells me she doesn't mind taking a language. Guess I was tricked by her ruling out Brandeis because of the language reqt. Silly me...

Yes, you can place out of the language requirement (as it presently stands) with a high enough score on the SAT II. This could change with the curriculum review underway, as all the graduation requirements are being reevaluated right now.

D is a chemistry major headed to UW Atmospheric Science doctoral program next year. She wants to do research on clouds and aerosols (I'm great at repeating this, but haven't much of a clue...) and go to the North or South Pole ASAP. Here's something your D might want to peak at - Because of Carleton and a particular chem prof., my D was paid to conduct research (collect cloud droplets and analyze chemical content with a fancy mass spec) above the arctic circle in northernmost Sweden with an American prof and his PhD candidates from a Zurich University (ETH). She spent 10 weeks "commuting" from Zurich to Abisko, Sweden all expenses paid plus a $4000 stipend! She did use her French when passing through Paris. Her Carleton prof seems to be one of few, if any, LAC profs who have the required mass spectrometer on campus and she is well known in this research area. I can go on and on about the benefits that she reaped from this experience. PM me if you'd like more info.
