Dorm life 2009 - Minneapolis Star Trib/Chicago Trib

Great article in the Star Tribune about the new dorms. Couldn't help but contrast to story I read few weeks earlier in the Chicago Tribune.

Luxury dorms: Purdue University, other schools build swanky housing to lure undergrads - Chicago Tribune

When I saw Cassat and Memorial open this fall, I couldn't get over the great community it established. The buildings are gorgeous. But more import, the design layout, with Nourse, Myers and the LDC next door, has established one great quad experience. Frisbees everywhere, kids just soaking up the sun and hanging out. Can't help but feel that Carleton - and Carls - have their priorities straight.

More hot off the press:

Memorial and Cassat traveled cross-country to visit the New York Times education supplement two weeks ago. The Times did a focus on new luxury, high cost towers at BU, Purdue and GW. Carleton's dorms are mentioned in the intro not for their high price tag or gold plated doorknobs but "environmental touches like radiant in-floor heating and real-time energy monitors (like those at Carleton College’s new Cassat and Memorial Hall)."

And a review in the TC Daily Planet this week:

I almost wrote the Times about that mention, since it implied that Cassat and Memorial were of a piece with those luxury dorms. As the Star Tribune's article details, the opposite is true.
