I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference; I had friends that used both.

Mobility isn't that huge of a thing, since you'll probably be spending a good chunk of your time in the school's clusters, so I'd definitely recommend a desktop instead of a laptop (as well as the ability to possibly install Linux at some point, since I think that allows you to not have to SSH into their servers to run code remotely from your room).

It depends on what you want to do with it....

If you want to edit multimedia for a good deal of your time and have very good customer support, go with a mac.

But if I want to easily be able to upgrade, run most all software, and have the most third party programs available, go with a PC.

I think you'd be fine with either OS.

If not, there's always bootcamp.....or linux

The other benefit with a Mac is that its based off Unix, so that compatibility helps. Well, I bought a MacBook last year, and it works well enough, so I'm just going to bring that one.

whether to buy mac equals whether you can afford it.
if you want windows, you can use bootcamp.
but pc cannot use OS.
i deserted windows for 90% times. the 10% is only for msn offline messages and games.
but macbook is not for game. maybe MB Pro.

Get a Mac, *BSD, or Linux. *BSD will require you to configure your system by hand. OpenBSD is the exception. All *BSDs are picky, so you'd have to look at user's previous experiences with laptops to see which one is the best hardware-compatibility wise. Linux has so many versions, and ease-of-use varies across the board. One things for sure that Ubuntu is one of the easiest I've seen, and the Dell XPS laptops are fully compatible with Linux. Mac is good in that it is a Unix operating system and Apple ensures hardware compatibility. Personally, I'd get a Mac because if you can't find a Mac version of a program then you can install Gentoo Portage on it and install a host of other open source applications developed originally for Linux
on it.

uhh dude, pc any day. macs are soooo overrated and overpriced.
people say macs can not get viruses. honestly, that is the biggest bs ive ever heard. cuz it aint true. virus people dont target macs cuz only 5% of all people use macs. but ive friends who are mac users and they make great efforts to lie about the viruses they get on their computers. that is they try to act like they dont get viruses but ive seen their computers. they definitely do.
and, you can do so much more with a pc than with a mac. not only that, you can save yourself a ton of money.

a $700 dell is as good as a macbook which is $1100. so there, you save $400.

Just say screw it and go Linux.

I use Arch Linux and I'm pretty happy with it.
