I am so incredibly happy that i got into CIT! (regular decision)
I applied as UNDECIDED, but I plan to do ECE & CE as my major.

HOWEVER

For fun, I looked at my CMU application...
and I saw something that i had not seen before...

In the box where we rank the school and departments of CMU
Under CIT, it states in italics: "If you want to be considered for electrical and computer engineering, you must specify this department"

Since I applied as UNDECIDED.... does this mean that I cannot choose ECE & CE as my major later????

I applied to CIT as well. How did you find out you were accepted RD???? Did you get the letter already?

When I was admitted to CIT, like, six years ago, they had also listed me as Undecided even though I stated I wanted my major to be MSE. When I finally got in and met all of my friends, it turns out all of them had also been listed as Undecided. They don't let you declare your major until halfway through your second semester.

If you weren't accepted into ECE it would say "Restricted Admission" or something of the sort like that. I started getting crap from ECE trying to recruit me even though I hadn't applied to them, so if you start seeing things from there then you should be in.

You could always try calling the admissions office and asking, too.

Hey, I'm a current freshman in CIT. RacinReaver is correct - students do not declare majors until March of the second semester (I just declared ChemE).

"Restricted Admission" from ECE means that when the time comes to declare your CIT major, you cannot simply declare ECE like you would ChemE or MechE. If you decide this is the path you want to pursue, you need to apply to that major separately. You can discuss this with the first-year advisor, from whom you'll hear over the summer. All other CIT majors are open to you, however.

It's really not a big deal - if you do well your first semester, and take the ECE intro course, you should be able to transfer into that major fairly easily. All students in my year who wanted ECE and went through the transfer application process were accepted.

My daughter just got the official "fat letter", and it very clearly says that she can do all majors in engineering EXCEPT for CS and EE. Thanks those of you who said she could try anyway.
