Wait List confusion

I want to distinguish fact from fiction. On my online decision, it says I got wait listed to MCS and HSS. I have read in many other posts that you can get wait listed online but when you get the mail, it says you got accepted. Is this true? If so, can you get wait listed for a major but in to the college?

Help!
Oh...if someone can explain how CMU's wait list works. Priority? Normal? Position on wait list?
Thanks!

You are definitely waitlisted. What you were hearing about are a select group of students who applied to the ECE program in CIT and were waitlisted from that program but admitted to non-ECE engineering majors in CIT. That does not happen in other schools.

If you applied to ONLY one college (not if you were only waitlisted at one - you had to apply to only one) you will be given the option to join the priority waitlist. This one has give or take a 40% admit rate I believe - at least I think thats what it was in years past. Otherwise you're forced to join the normal waitlist, which has a much lower admit rate, though I don't know numbers.
