I was accepted to CMU(CIT)-ECE. What if I change my mind and want to do material science or,let's say, civil and environmental engineering. How hard it is to switch? Can I switch before school starts in fall? If I start out in my original major and change my mind, will it be too late once I've done 1 or 2 semesters? I'm afraid I'll get off-track and it will take me longer to graduate ( and my parents will kill me). What if I decide engineering is not for me. Can I switch to something else altogether and how hard would that be ? Also, how feasible is it to double major ( engineering and some other major)? I would really appreciate any input from past or present students!

Being ECE, it is very easy to switch. We have to take two intro engineering courses our freshman year, so changing is a piece of cake. However, being an ECE, why you would ever want to do that is beyond me.

Basically, take the classes you want to take. If they happen to conform to a major, pick that major.

your grade (dean's list looks nice)
your college rank (in my own made up ranking system)
SCS / CIT (ECE)
CIT (excluding ECE)
Tepper (although they think they are on top)
MCS (excluding CF)
HSS (excluding IS)

i'd say somewhere around this order. going up requires your grade to be good, going down is easier.
